    Wood Creek walleye

I am just curious, for those people that fish that lake. It has been reported that the native strain of walleye have been stocked in that lake (As they have no possible chance to spawn) and will fail without continued stocking, Do you want them there and will you fish for them?

I would love to see the walleye do well in the lake. I just started fishing for them and really enjoy catching them. It would be a lot closer for me to go instead of having to drive all the way to Cumberland. Have caught some real nice ones in laurel and would love to have somewhere else close to fish.

I agree. If the fish could be established in that lake and there was continued stocking it could be a good thing. And it will make the property more valuable next to to lake and i hope they do well as they should if we pay to stock more trout in the lake, Rasberry to you you Joe B.

What makes you think they can't spawn. The same strain is being stocked in Laurel and are doing fine ???

The native fish do not have the same shoals that they spawned on with flowing water in laurel lake as well as wood creek, Yes they may do well in those lakes if there is a continued stocking effort from the fish from the rockcastle river, if that happens now or it ever did it would be intresting. If the non native erie strain were stocked in laurel or wood creek they will not spawn ever to sustain a population of walleye in either lake, tell me If I am wrong.

You have erie strain stocked in laurel as of now.

Just a thought, On Cumberland there are still sauger in the lake which require much more difficult spawning conditions than do the stocked walleye from erie and the native walleye would spawn in the same place. Why not use the native walleye from the rockcastle to stock the lake, if we have to stock it to keep the population up anyway?

I may be wrong but it is my understanding that the Erie strain is being used so they WILL spawn in these lakes. They spawn on the same flats that the small mouth do and don't require the "river" to reproduce. Got my info from a fish biologist,,,,????

Great info from your "Bio" Then quit stocking them and there should be a plenty. if they do the job as far as spawning like bluegills they will over run the place. I doubt that will happen and the erie strain will always need supplemental stocking to mantain a fishable population in the lakes "laurel" which has no spawning area for native walleye, so keep them there. Cumberland does have several areas where the native fish can spawn and yes they may need stocking to contiue the fishery as far as people wanting to catch them so why not use the native strain in Cumberland? it will be intresting to see what happens in wood creek but I will predict that it will fail and that was the purpose.

Stocking with the purpose to fail- what a comment.

Man why be so negative!!! AND If you would read before you jump I SAID SMALL MOUTH NOT BLUEGILLS and I hope you know the difference in the two speciecs spawning cycle. If not here goes smallmouth ( and most walleye) spawn ONCE a year. BLUEGILL 5-9 times a year every full moon when the water gets warm enough. SO the walleye won't reproduce like a blue gill !!!!!!!!
