RE: KY Lake Guide Service Blood River Area

I apologize if I offended anyone about eating fish. I also apologize for being vague about my intentions. My wife, two kids and I have planned a family camping, fishing, bike riding trip to Piney campground. We will be staying in the area for 3 nights. Our intentions are to catch some fish and eat them. We prefer to eat crappie and walleye. However we are not really too successful, yet we don’t care a whole lot because we still have fun. Our last trip to Kentucky Lake was about 5 years ago. We did by fishing licenses and fished for some crappie. At that time I did hook up with Dave Stewart and he marked a couple of places on a map to try for some crappie across from Jonathan creek area. I did pay him for his services. We caught about 10 crappie and we ate all of them. My kids had a blast and that is because I was able to get them on a few fish. THANKS DAVE! We don’t get a whole lot of time and rarely get a chance to get out on quality waters that you all have access to. I was just hoping for a little edge to get on some fish. My kids have a very short attention span and hiring a guide I think is a great idea but is kind of a waist of money to take the rest of the family out. I doesn’t seem fare for me to leave them by there selves and me hire a guide and go out and have a good ole time without them. So my next best option was to get a map if possible. I am willing to pay for that service if it is available.

    Thanks

If you are looking to catch some numbers of fish with your kids, my 5 year old wore out the bluegill off of shaded areas of the boat dock over July 4th, on night crawlers. You should also be able to set out some jugs for cat-fish in the evenings near camp and pick up some cats, if you don't mind filleting them. They are more difficult to fillet for me. As for crappie, if you have a depth finder you should be able to pick up some good brush piles off the bank on deeper drops and find some crappie. Good luck.

Hi Ed: Should have looked at your profile and I would have recognized your name. Again, you might want to call John Morgan to see if he will mark you a map...you can find a link to his website at www.kentuckylake.com Good luck and have a good time while your down here.

This post seems to be getting a lot of folks riled up one way or the other...I am a guide here on Ky Lake so let me put my 2 cents worth.

First, there is a state limit on bass and anyone that wants to catch some for food has that right.

Second, I am a full time catch and release bass guide..and in being so will not mark a map for anyone nor guide anyone that wants to keep the bass. It is my business and that is the way I run it. If you are wanting to just catch some bass for the fun of it and release them then I do mark maps for a price.

Third: If you are fishing for pan fish, catfish etc I would suggest you contact John Morgan to see if he will mark a map for you...he may or may not...some guides will not mark maps..especially panfish guides but you don't know until you ask..I can tell you that John is probably the top panfish guide in the Blood River area and has a good reputation. You might even consider booking a trip with him...he would be worth your while.

Fouth: If you want a catch and release bass trip I would be happy to accomodate you if I have a date open that would work for you.

    Dave

You know I have had a lot of folks over the past few years catch the biggest bass of their life and they all decided to get a replica made (if they wanted a mount at all). I have not had anyone in my boat in a number of years that really wanted to keep a big fish for mounting that they had caught. If you insisted I would let you keep it but I would do my best to encourage you to to take the pics and measurements and release the fish so that someone else would have the thrill of catching that big fish again not to mention keeping the gene pool in the lake of that big fish.

I noticed that you didn't say what kind of fish you were after. I also noticed that one other guy posted a negative comment about your question. I assume he is a tournament fishermen or maybe a pure bass catch and release type of guy as why else would he nix your legitamate question about where to fish. After all this is a fishing discussion forum and the main question that EVERYONE wants to know is where are the fish and what are the hitting today. Right?

So here is an alternative assumption. Maybe just maybe fishforfood is asking about where to catch PANFISH, Catfish or some other species of fish BESIDE Largemouth, SmallMouth or Kentucy Bass?

If you are after crappie or other pan fish then blood river is a good place to fish. You may wish to visit the Kentucy DNR web site and look up the Blood River Crappie Tracking Survey Results. That may give you some good clues as to where the catch the slab crappie in the Blood River Area. Remember you can catch crappie year round if you know where they hang out

Most crappie this time of the year are found out on the ledges in relatively deeper water. Crappie may suspend about 10 to 18ft down below the surface and over deep water. They may still be relating to the ledges but they may not be right close to the ledge. The ledge may be at 18ft and the crappie can suspend out 100 yards from the ledge (horizontally) and then still be at 18 ft below the surface but over 50 ft of water. Try slow trolling though the channel with a spider rigged up boat. Speed of 1 mph to 2 mph work well.

You got to be kidding? With a name like fish4food no one is that stupid to help out the meat hunters unless you pay.
