I checked it out this weekend, turns out that when the depth finder was placed in the front deck panel by the dealer, they plugged it directly into a switch running to the batteries in the back, and did not utilyze the 3 amp fuse. I installed a fuse, just to see if it would help but it was too little too late. I think the damage is done, it still cuts out at shallow depths. I noticed in the manual that failure to use the fuse voids the waranty, so it must be an important detail that was ignored. I appreciate the advice though, thanks.
