Even though you lost the fish you at least had one the fights of your lifetime...which if you're like me is enough to make you want to want to get back on the water as soon as possible...

Fished the lake this weekend - mostly bottom fished for striper. I can tell you the smallies and KYs are both on the main lake. Every bass article I read says to fish the backs of the creeks in the fall, but there wasn't a shortage of bass on the main lake. Several stripers were caught bottom fishing main lake flats too so I wouldn't get overly concerned trying to find deep water. I had the biggest striper of my life snap my line right at the boat. To **** hard to try and control the fish when your stuck on the bank and net it at the same time; **** thing rolled on me at the boat at that was that. Brought tears to my eyes - fight lasted about 15 minutes - I'd guess the fish was close to 40#.

water on main lake yesterday was 61.1 and the lake is down about 30 ft. hope this helps.
Had one striper on a spook. took about 45 minutes to land, because I was using 12-test. It was in the 30 lb.+ range. It came from the mid-lake area around Thomas Branch. It was on the iside of the point.
water temp Saturday was 63 degrees. Water is starting to turn over some. Still green, but not real clear for Cumberland.
Guys I wish I could play for you the message on my answering machine that Lowerider sent on his cell after loosing that biggun.
Maybe I'll buy him a Saltwater Gaff for Christmas:)
Dave.
Thanks guys for the report. Sounds like it will be tough this
weekend.

Lowerider seems to always under-state things. If he said it was close to 40, probably more like fifty. Instead of a gaff, lets chip in and buy him a harpoon gun!
I'll try and answer all the Qs here
None of my stripers were caught in water deeper than 50 ft. I pulled up on a main lake flat and fan casted 8 lines from 10 ft off the bank (10 ft of water) out to about 50 ft. The biggin came out of 50 ft. Seemed the fish got smaller the closer they were to the bank, but i had more action on the rods in 25ft or less of water. Mainly because the bass kept biting. Others had better luck with landing the bass (I use bigger hooks) but a guide got 7 keeper size smallies Saturday bottom fishing shad in the same area. The lake is waaaay down - you can see cofins and bones at Cemetary Point. I know the lake was dropping too b/c i had to jump from the marina to the shoreline when i got back in - the water dropped enough to make the walking ramp fall into the water. The mainlake temp was around 65 degrees last weekend.
I think you need a lot of bait when fishing this way. Most of my bites came not long after i casted out a fresh shad - so change your bait often. They don't stay alive much longer than 1/2 hour on your hook, even in this water temp. A good bait tank can easily hold 4 alwives per gallon. Make sure to use plenty of salt.
Good luck - I hope everyone makes it out for a little fall action...
