A Helping Hand

a helping hand... I was on cedar creek saturday, came out around the dam ramp. An older gentleman couldn't get his boat started out in the water, so I went over to help. After many different primer bulb, choke, starts, restarts AND fighting the 40 mph winds, we got her going. It was my pleasure to lend a hand.

I learned a valuable lesson... when you're out on the water, or anywhere else for that matter, pay attention to those around you. It doesn't take but just a second to show a perfect stranger that you care. Offer assistance to anyone that looks like they may need some help, even if you're not too sure how.

As we move into this season of giving thanks and remembering our Savior's birth, let's not get too busy to lend a helping hand.

p.s. I only caught two fish all day, but had a smile on my face all the way back to Lexington...

being helpful pays off.I try to help and have helped many in my years of fishing.probably the best was on nolin when i lived there a few years back,i was crappie fishin and brushpile huntin
on a 40 DEGREE january day i was the last boat on the lake coming back to moutadier at very close to dark,saw an older man in a bass tracker and just stopped to see if he caught any,turns out his he had pulled his killswitch unknowingly and ran all his batteries down and was stranded by conoloway,i got him going and followed him back to the ramp,sad thing is he tried to wave down a couple of boats.maybe they didn't see him but i always pay attention to that in winter,he'd been there all night or would have had to try and walk somewhere,in turn i have always been helped if something happens,it runs a circle back to you.

I have been a good samaritan, and have also been on the recieving end of good deeds. Three years ago, while running up the chute at Ky lake, my jack plate broke, and caused my motor ro rock back into the water. Thank heavens the bottom bolts held or I'd have lost the whole thing. Not one but 2 boats showed up to lend a hand. One pair of guys took my buddy mike to Ky. dam to pick up the truck and trailer, the other pair towed me and my boat to the Moors, which was closer. Once we got to the mores, a guy helped me winch my motor up, remove the jack plate and remount the motor to the transom, then helped me rid the cylanders of water. Got the motor running and I drove home to Louisville, thanking my lucky stars the whole way. I couldn't thank those guys enough. So whenever I see anyone in a bind weather it be big or small, I always try to help. I owe it to the good people who were kind enough to help me.

A friend of mine and I were fishing a tourney on Barren and had some fish. We were fishing a flat in Peter Crk. when we had noticed a pontoon that had docked earlier at a private dock was drifting a few feet away from it's dock. We were several hundred yards from the boat and continued to fish. We then saw a lady screaming and waving a little later as we were leaving. We figured she needed help getting the boat tied off so we idled back to help. When we got there, we found her husband unconscious lying flat on the deck of the pontoon. I am a fireman by trade and my buddy is a cop. It was apparent he had had a massive stroke. We started basic care and loaded him onto the front deck of our boat. We called the state police post who relayed to rescue squad. We boated him to the state dock and treated him until the rescue squad arrived. I have no idea whether he made it or not.

I cant count the numerous times I have wrangled stray boats floating away from docks from careless tying, I was once offered 50 bucks for bringing a pontoon back to an old ladies dock. I re-assured her that she could save my bacon one day and went on my way. Its a secret bond us water people share, we look out for our own.

As reliable as my boat is, I will probably be one of those that need help sooner or later. Glad to see there is still people out there willing to help. Have not been in that situation before but I would hope I could get help if needed. I know I would do the same.
