    Tornadoes and Moor's resort

Well, as you probably know by now, Western KY (my neck of the woods) was slammed by tornadoes yesterday. I just got my phone and electric back on, it is around 11:00 pm here. I had no idea that tornadoes had even touched down here until I went to get some food at the local Wal-Mart. One of the ladies that worked there had a nephew that lived in a mobile home near Benton and he was killed when his trailer flipped and caught on fire and he burned to death.

While there I heard some bad news about Moor's Resort. As the crow flies, I live about 2 miles from Moor's and I had a hard time beleiving it (because of the lack of damage at my house and on the way to the store)so I went to Moor's to hear it straight from the horses mouth. The marina has basically been destroyed along with most of the boats and all of the campground. The cabins were not affected, neither was the restaurant or office. I was not allowed in to see the damage, they blocked off the road at the entrance. I talked to the guy sitting in his car at the blockade and he said that the store and the A and B docks had torn loose and were wedged against the breaker wall and basically destroyed, along with the boats attached to these docks. The parts of the docks closest to shore were severly twisted and bent and partially if not wholey unconnected and over by the breaker wall. The only boats not destrtoyed were the boats closest to shore on the part of the dock that did not come unattached. Most of these boats have been damaged.

He said that they would let boat owners in tomorrow after the have cleaned up the downed power lines and if you had a boat, call your insurance company because there is an 80-90% cahnce no your boat has been smahed to pieces.

My cable still does not work so I cannot tell you anything else that occurred around here, but one lady at the store said she had heard that there were 30 or more tornadoes in this part of the state and that Henry county TN (Paris Landing) had been basically destroyed. I do not know if that is true or not.

Anyway, please say a few prayers for these folks, they sure need it. Thanks.

Hmmm, I went and read Kentucky.com and Cnn.com for more info on the tornados. Seems that Paris Tn is still there and was not hit as hard as I heard. Also, the number of tornados in unknown but from what I read, it did not sound like there were 30 + tornados. Thank goodness, only part of the sky fell.

The tornado came thru about 1/4 mile from my house here...lots of damage for sure...my wife and I were lucky. We had plenty of warning here about the tornados on the television, radio and with the sirens going off all afternoon. Not sure how you could have missed all that...guess you did though or you would have heard on the media that they were requesting that people do not go near Moor's Camp road as the siteseers were impeding the rescue vehicles trying to get into the area.

    More

It is 8:30 here central time and the Marshall County EMS is still requesting that folks stay away from the Moor's Camp Road, Big Bear Road and Dunn's Cemetary Road area so that the utility and road crews can complete their repairs and clear the roads. Residents will be allowed back into the area at 11:00 a.m.

Dave, glad you and your wife is ok. Sad to hear about the other damage--especially the person in the trailer. We'll keep you all in our prayers!

There was only the one guy there, no rescue or anything like that when I went. If there had been I would have turned around and left before getting there, I am not a TOTAL moron.

I managed to sleep through it because I was making candles all night and into the morning til about 9 a.m. Woke up to thunder and no power. No power = no info...

Really puts things in perspective. The cover on my boat got shredded last night by straight-line winds in excess of 70 MPH here in BG. I started to whine and my wife quickly shut me up and pointed to the news story on TV concerning the damage near Benton. I felt real silly at that point. Our prayers go out to all those affected by this last storm. Boat covers, boats, roofs and even marinas can be replaced (well insured I hope)...human life cannot. Hope things get back to normal soon.

Mollie and I were thinking about you last night when we saw it on TV....glad you all are alright. Sad to hear about the Moors. Always loved staying there. Hope they can get it cleaned up. Praying for those who lost lives and property.

Lucky that the tornado did not come by your house while you were sleeping. Sounds like a good reason to invest in a battery powered weather radio.

    RE: Tornadoes and Moor's resort

It looks like 2 tornados touched down near Paris, TN, one in Southern Montgomery county just South of Clarksville, one in Benton, KY, and a few others here in there in the rural areas. From what I have seen Benton and Montgomery County were hit pretty hard, Paris's emergency management center was hit as well, sort of ironic...

Glad that everyone made it through those storms and prayers go out to the less fortunate.

I would definitly think about purchasing a weather radio if you dont have one, buy 2, one for your boat and one for the house.
