    Have you ever seen this?

My buddy and I were fishing a small lake I belong to last week. We got out there at about 4 AM and loaded in the scamper. As we started fishing, I saw a yearling duck swimming about 15 yards in front of the boat and all of a sudden it sounded like an explosion! The duck was gone. No sight of it anywhere. This didn't sound like a fish coming up and hitting a topwater, it was more like a huge flat rock dropped vertically in the water and made the kerplunge sound. Nonetheless I got the heck out of there, not knowing what lurked underneath. What was this a state record bass? catfish? turtle? I don't know but it scared the piss out of me. Next time I am thinking about taking my rubber duck and sticking a big ole treble hook on that sucker. Didn't Heddon make those way back when?

    Was it an alligator?

    Maybe a crazed beaver?

If you might have read in the Courier-Journal back last fall or earlier this spring. there was an aligator killed in a small community subdivision lake here in Ky. The guy killed it with a 22 rifle, he was Bass fishing and after hooking a nice size Bass and was bring it in, the gator caught and ate it...made the dude mad so he went back up to his house, got his gun, shot the gator dead.... True story...Call Courier-Journal for more info....

A friend and I were fishing a pond near Springfield and a 6+ pound largemouth took a grown red-winged black bird off a willow twig that was about 6 inches above the water. It didn't come back up either. We also were at another pond and there were some bank runners (about 8-10 inch bass) that were leaping out of the water onto this sloped rock catching small dragon flies/ mayflies or something...and then flopping back into the water. We saw this at least a dozen times while we were there.

I HAVE HEARD THAT LM BASS AND STIPED/HYBRID WILL EAT SMALL BIRDS OFF THE SURFACE. THAT PRETTY COOL TO SEE SOMETHING LIKE THAT HAPPEN. BUT WATCH OUT FOR THE GATORS. A LOT OF PEOPLE GET THEM AS PETS AND WHEN THEY GET TOO BIG THEY HAVE TO LET THEM GO SOMEWHERE.

It very well could have been a bass. My wife and I were fishing an old strip pit that also served as a swimming hole. It had been closed off to the public for years, but her dad knew the folks that owned it.

Anyway, we were fishing the shallow area... the swimming part, as we could not make it through the growth to any other areas. Down about 50 yards a small wood duck was swimming across the lake. Wooooosh.. and swirl, and the duck was gone. It never came back up. We were catching a ton of bass in the 13-15 inch range. I don't know if it was a big old catfish that got the duck or a monster bass. However, we convinced ourselves it was a bass so we would always believe we would catch that monster someday. Then the land was sold again, and to my knowledge, no one has entry there anymore. What a shame.

    Tight lines and God Bless

I agree on the catfish or bass as the most likely culprit.

RE: Have you ever seen this?

A few years ago (15 +/-) my wife and I were bluegill fishing at Willisburg lake when she pointed out to me a mother duck with her small ones following her on the opposite bank. Suddenly a splash occured and the last baby duck was seperated from the rest of the group and while my wife and I both were watching a very large bass came up under the duckling and the duck was no more. My wife looked directly at me and said-"If you had come home and told me about just what happened, I would have checked to see if you had been drinking while fishing". I know it sounds strange, but I have seen with my own eyes that bass do eat baby ducks.

To note, this was not a baby duck. He was the yearling size, a pretty good size duck for a bass to be eating.
