Bowfishing river past Friday night

Well we went out bowfishing for the first time this year and the water on the mighty Ohio river was fairly clear and appeared to be down a little which made the main river flats even better. If you are planning to get out do so before any rains mess up the visibility. We got about 30 carp and a couple of cats. Nothing huge but it was fun going again.

I HAVE ALWAYS WONDERED WHAT HAPPENS TO THE CARP AFTER THEY PUT AN ARROW THROUGH THERE HEAD? i HAVE HEARD THEY WERE NOT A GOOD FISH TO EAT.

Danny most of the time there are certain people that catfish the river where we put in that tell us they will take em. I think they barbecue them, better them than me.

not being racist but alot of black people like to eat them. they are always down in the bottoms in henderson tryin gto catch them with nets and we shoot some for them.

I have heard in the past years,that they sell smoke carp in western ky for 20.00 a plate-I don,t know this for a fact--but if its true i would try it. lol

As for fish disposal....most times my fish are delivered to a sinkhole on my farm. Critters gotta eat too. Yes this is an exceptable method of discarding them. I do not agree w/ nor will I tolerate returning these fish to the waterways dead. Especially dumping them at ramp areas or near public water accesses!
Hog farmers will sometimes take these fish as food as it's pure protein and free.
At the UBK Carporee each may LBL takes all small carp from us and uses them for food for the raptor rehabilttaion area.
Many bury them in their garden as fertilizer.

As many don't like the idea of "wasting" this fish there are very few options and this is an exceptable way of ridding the waters of "exotic" and "non-native" fish. Common carp, bigheads, silvers, grassies, black carp.....etc are all non native and mostly inedible. The silvers are actually quite good w/ white flaky meat you just have to know how to extract that meat while leaving the floating Y bones out. W/ fish in the 25# range it's easy to get 5# of boneless fillet out of them.

Many of the native species such as Buffalo and Gar are actually quite good to eat you just have to know how to clean and prepare them. Catfish....I'll beat someone for not eating them..LOL

Had 14 bigheas between 38lbs and 56lbs. Prob. over 500# total.

Amen. If you've never had buffalo ribs (yes, buffalo carp ribs) you are missing out. They are great!

I've heard that a lot of the fish that most of us pass on are actually good when prepared properly. One of the things that my wife's grandfather does with some of the bonier fish is to skin'em, gut'em, cut the heads off, and pressure cook'em. He explained that if done properly, the bones get soft like the ones you get in a can of salmon. I swear I think he'd eat just about anything that comes from the water. He was probably down at the Ohio the other day to see if they'd let him take that octopus home and cook it. lol Never really had an interest in bowfishing (buying euqipment and such) but it does sound like something fun to try once or twice.
