Bowfishing river past Friday night

Kentucky Afield had a nice article about bowfishing in it this month. It spoke of how carp can be prepared (smoked) and how the meat isn't bad as some say. They said that bowfishing is encouraged as a means of removing exotics, especially the asians. I for one do not bowfish, but after reading it and hearing the stories of how fun it is, I think I might give it a try! I probably wouldn't eat the carp, and as for the previous post on here, we western Ky people do not pay $20 a plate for carp! That's ridiculous! The only $20 plate of food I buy is the one at Patti's, the 2" porkchop...mmmmmmm...!!!

As far as disposal of carp goes, the fertilizer idea would be my choice. I have a small garden at home that has been filled with all kinds of fish like carp, drum, and lots and lots of catfish guts! It even has a large bit of Coots in it! All can say is my tomatoes get larger every year! :)

Do any of you bowfisherman take many Paddlefish? I would love to get ahold of some of them!

Hope you liked the article in KY Afield. I took Joe out on the KY River so he could write that one. Actually that's a pic of me w/ 2 other guys in my boat in the article.

We shoot a few (limit 2). I don't advocate people taking spoonies unless they are eatin. They're really good grilled, but seem to be easy to overcook. As w/ most fish they tend to be more firm and tasty when taken from cooler water. The 1 I shot last weekend was kinda spongy.

How many of those jumping asians have you shot with a bow in the air? I always wanted to try that with a shotgun!

Most of the time I snag spoonbill in the spring. Like you said, they get a little spongy in the summertime - only way to help that is by cleaning them as soon as you catch'em and get them on ice...the meat will stay a lot more firm if you do it that way.

That's me. I've shot a few silvers while flying, but would like to brag a say "yeah tons" , but in reallity just a handful. Normally I'm shooting bigheads and not running the generator, which makes them jump. Bigheads are very noise and light shy and you just won't shoot many w. a genny going.
Shot one out of the air while on Ky Afield a few years ago. Cameraman like to crapped himself! LOL Pure luck!

Last time I went to the Tennesse River...I cut the paddlefish's heads off, gutted them and through them on a block of ice in a cooler. They held good and tasted nice. Might have to pack some ice tonight. Thanks

I've heard that a lot of the fish that most of us pass on are actually good when prepared properly. One of the things that my wife's grandfather does with some of the bonier fish is to skin'em, gut'em, cut the heads off, and pressure cook'em. He explained that if done properly, the bones get soft like the ones you get in a can of salmon. I swear I think he'd eat just about anything that comes from the water. He was probably down at the Ohio the other day to see if they'd let him take that octopus home and cook it. lol Never really had an interest in bowfishing (buying euqipment and such) but it does sound like something fun to try once or twice.
