Totally agree. You couldn't pay me to fish that lake. I'm sure for a select few who have little honeyholes it's pretty good. But for me it S U C K S.
funny funny.. I laughed out loud
Well this is terrible news!
I had thought Malone was supposed to be above average compared to most lakes?
The outing is strictly for fishing and targeting gills and cats.
Any suggestions on where else to go? I'm from Nelson County and want to keep my drive to around 2 hrs or less.
Thanks!
I know there are a lot of Malone Haters on the board - I am not one. I really like the lake, I would fish it over Barren any day (I'm a Barren hater!).
I always catch at least a few bass everytime out. This year has produced my biggest - 7lber. Also, I have been at the state dock during weigh ins and I have seen some real nice bags of fish.
You can stop in this little tackle store in Quality, they run the Fri night tournaments and she will give you some good info.
Also, jigs, texas rig worms and fluke produce for me. Its a smaller lake so fairly easy to navigate around. State dock side has deeper water with rock bluffs and there are some nice coves spread out. If I were you I would go into the no ski zones and fish the walls deep with a jig and pacca chunk. Once you go by Shady Cliff boat ramp and under the bridge the water gets shallow and some good fish come out of there too.
I wish I had more info, but I with gas prices I haven't been down there as much as I had hoped. I make the 20 minute drive to Barren an on the way back I say I should have went to Malone.
I think its worth a shot. If the bass aren't biting get some crickets and catch some nice shell crackers.
Blessed Fishin
Ok, Ok, cheap laugh, but man it's a tough lake for me. I'll never be a true Malone "hater", Pastorbass, because my 2nd biggest bass came from there a gazillion years ago.
Amen on the shellcrackers. We used to catch them on the gravel banks and in main lake cuts.
Dubya, don't let me discourage you! If nothing else, you'll learn a new body of water. I think Pastorbass gave you some great info.

If you are after cats and gills, don't let anyone scare you off.
I live 25 miles from the lake, and I quit fishing it back in '98. Since then I've bought a boat that is too big (motor limit of 150 hp in summer and 200 in winter) to fish Malone. Otherwise I think I would give it another chance. I know a lot of folks who catch great bass from that lake.
Now for cats..... I found a bluff wall I used to fish when I had my pontoon. I would pull up and hope the fish would leave me alone...LOL. I used a float... slip float, and minnows. There is an underground stream or something that comes in right there on that wall, well under water. I caught a ton of nice blue or channel cats. I released them all, but man they were perfect size. All went from 2 to 10 lbs. Perfect eating sizes... the smaller ones.
I am sure I could take someone back to that bluff, but I would have to spend some time looking for it. I know I can not tell you how to get to it. There is some current on the wall, and leads to a point and it is in the no ski zone down toward the state ramp.
If looking for bass, my best have come from the point right by the state ramp, and there are some nice bass back in the no ski zone as well, or so I am told. My best bass days came back in an area known as sherwood point. The guy that used to run Shady Cliff... Nat Noffsinger, used to have a hand drawn map of the lake that he had in his little office.
Good luck, and let us all know how you do.
BTW, this is a great night lake this time of year from what I've been told.
Tight lines and God Bless
Danny
Guys,
Guess I will give it a try. Definitely going after the gills and cats, so not too worried with the bass action.
I sincerely appreciate all the info, and I will give a report when I return.
Thanks!
lake malone is one of the better lakes in ky. 2 years ago i causght a 7.99 last year i caught an 8.86 and this year i cuaght a 9.4 and as far as 4 and 5 pounders go i cant even count them if you wanna do good on that lake you have to fish a little different than ever yone else.
for the people that hate it you proly go up there and fish the bank or at least hit it or fish the grass. yes that can be productive sometimes but try going deep and get off the bank. tyr fishing from 15 to 25 feet deep instead of banging the bank. My partner and i have came in the money almost every tournament up there in the past month and a half.. and just to let you know we are not catching 10-13 lbs. in 3 fish because the lake ####.
I agree. I just started fishing Malone this year. Haven't lived in the area long and wanted a close place to fish. When I first started it was tough to figure the lake out, not that I have figured it out now but have a better understanding. If you want to catch little fish then bang the bank, but for quality fish back off anf fish deeper. My partenr and I won the Tues. night tourney last night with a 6.29. I've seen some good fish weighed this year and know they are in there it just takes patience.
what is your name if you dont mind me asking? my name is matt robertson and wendel anderson fishes with me. i run a maroon ranger well did just baught a skeeter
