Most bass i have seen that are dark/black are ill. The next step was usually a white fungus and then the bass just seemed stunned and would die soon after. Not sure how to tell the age of a bass.

I'm not sure how old bass get to be but last night there was a great top water bite caught a 3-10 and a 4-10 on back to back cast the bigger bass had a huge head and was very skinny looked like it should have been a 6+ and it was almost solid black except for the tail area and it put up no fight what so ever it almost looked ticked off that I put it back in the water it had several battle scars on its head I was just wondering if it was an old fish or just one thats been rode hard and put up wet.

To tell the age of a bass, you half to cut them in half and count the rings
No you don't have to cut the bass in half to age the fish Just take a scale from behind the gill slit and then look at the number of rings on the fish's scale. You can age a fish without cutting it in half.
