    Cumberland river reports?

Any one been down to the River lately I am thinking about heading back down there again this week but after the July skunk session I thought I better check it out first. So any hints would be great where and how, last time I launched at Burksville and headed up stream to crocus creek bar and floated back down a storm blew in and we had to clear out, water was falling fast. That may have been the problem. so have a heart and help out a trout disabled fool.

Everyone I talk to on the river says that fishing is getting better and better with the new slot.
No keeping fish 15 to 20 and only one OVER 20 allowed... at least I think that is the size limit.
Guides and fishermen are telling me that this has rejuvenated the river and increased the number of large rainbows.

We went last Sunday and had moderate success - Rainbows all under 15". We tried several baits Berkley trout powerbait, Kastmaster jigs and small crankbaits.

Went down a few weeks back and had fairly good success considering it was our first time on the river.. Put in at Traces on the Cumberland in burkesville and went upstream only a 1/4 mile the first day and floated back toward the ramp... My buddy and i caught about 6 in a hour and a half, only one under 15''.. biggest was 20''... The next day we put in and went downstream to the water intake and caught between 10 and 20 rainbows, biggest being 22''.. The first day caught them on yellow berkley powereggs (floating) with salmon eggs ... Second day we caught them on Yellow berkley powereggs (floating) tipped with a half of a nightcrawler on the back. Had a good time and it was especially great because despite it being 100 degrees out that day, being on the river felt very cool and relaxing.

Went down last weekend and fished saturday 10 to 4 we caught 56 . Mostly slots and had to throw them back but they were fun. Using shadraps between traces and burkesville ramp.

HOw did you manage to catch them with shapraps?? We tried a few weeks ago with artificial but didn't do as well as just drifting with powereggs and nightcrawlers.. I'd rather catch them on shadraps

Is it safe to float the river in my canoe.....

I'm fairly comfortable with the canoe, but I'm not too sure about floating the river with the canoe, especially when they may be generating.

    What do you guys think........

BTW.....I went a couple years ago, and used some REALLY small shad raps and caught TONS of them. The shad raps are the 1 inchers that have a silver body with a yellow and red strip down the middle.

    Later,

    RE: Cumberland river reports?

My wife and I float the river a couple of times every summer in our canoe. It's a very wide and stable boat though. The only problems you might encounter are trees just under the surface if the water lever is right. Gotta stay away from them. It's like canoeing anywhere, wear a life jacket always and store everything in dry bags. But, unlike other places, if you flip, you'll get COLD!!:7

like the other post said, you should be OK if you are used to your canoe, but the water is 52 degrees if you have a metal craft it is going to sweat, A LOT, so be prepared and have an eye out for the trees that are in the water there are some very large snags just under the surface, and if you tie off be sure you tie off at one end or the other not in the middle just in case there is a rapid increase of current. I have seen a couple of guys try to make it back to shore when they anchored amid ship and fell asleep and the curent kicked in before they knew it that jon boat was full of water, and if there had not been a kind fisherman close by I do not think one of them would have made it to shore he cramped up quick. so be carefull and let us know what you catch.
