    Boat Electric Question

When the key is turned and the motor starts, the GPS flashed and a couple of times (but not every time) the GPS turned off completely. Is this a short in the wiring? Or maybe a battery problem? Any help would be appreciated.

    RE: Boat Electric Question

Try setting the GPS unit to volts and see while you start the outboard if the voltage drops way down. My guess its dropping in voltage and turning off.

    RE: Boat Electric Question

It is normal for a voltage drain when you start your big motor. Look at your car, turn on your radio and then turn the key the radio goes off for a split second. Your main drive battery may be getting weak.

    RE: Boat Electric Question

It isn't normal, but it is common. Cars are setup so accessories are turned off during cranking, but boats aren't. When the cranking load is placed on the battery, it can't hold whatever is the GPS's minimum voltage, so it shuts down. Could be a bad battery, a battery that doesn't have enough CCA for your outboard, bad wiring to the GPS, loose connections or bad wires from the battery to the starter, or a bad starter.
