good study but it is inefficient to tell whether the theory is wrong or right.
you said you did this over a summers time, it would have to be done for years. you also said you did it to smaller fish and larger fish. the theory is based on bigger older smallies granted that you said you tagged 20 inch smallies.. i beleive it would be safe to say that you tagged alot more smaller ones rather than 20 inch smallies

and for the other person tell me W H Y ? you cannot compare them to whales or salmon they travel for a reason why not smallies ducks geese whales salmon robins black birds and probably hundreds and probably thousands more animals migrate
so why not small mouth maybe not to the extremes of the others but 2,3,or even 10 miles explain to me why not? except for that they have food near by. because you have food in your refrigerator and you still go out to eat more than a mile away .. i gaurantee it!
and for the person that compared them to humans think about what kind of human the indians and other people use to travel hundreds of miles every year.

Dude, why are yelling? This is a decent question and everyone is entitled to their own opinion. You get fired up too easy, take a break hero nobody is putting down your theories just maybe have some of their own. I can tell you this, Billy Westmoreland forgot more about them ole brown fish than YOU or anybody else I've ever met or heard of, that's not an opinion, that's a fact. Not all fish do the same thing as others, and large lakes and streams are two very different animals for sure. Therefore they can't really be considered under the same equation. I'm sure you have skills as a fisherman, but there are alot of guys on this site that just might take you to class, listen a little more sometimes you might learn something. When I first started getting on fishing sites and participating I didn't think I would learn much, maybe I'm a little cocky like you, but I was wrong. I did learn some new techinues and put them to good use and hopefully I've helped some others along the way as well. I've also met a couple of fisherman that I can now call new friends and that means alot where I'm from. Point being, and take this as constructive critism, don't be so confrontational and maybe you'll meet some new friends too, and become a more rounded fisherman, tightlines, Mark Hall. :7

Chill out dude, the KDFRW study was a good one for the stream fishing. Some of the fish traveled and some didn't. Some traveled 10+miles.

What is your point of wearing someone out that took the time to give you a detailed report of a study that was done on the New River. It's hugh.

To hell with what I wrote for as I said in the first line, It is my opinion and evidently there are a lot of opinions on this topic. Obviously smallmouth can move to find a better location for various reasons. It is my opinion from what I have read (definetly not from my fishing experience) that once you locate smallmouth it should be good fishing grounds for the future and you can look for the same type habitat. Smallmouth probably will stay close to the same location if all conditions are met.

I just read a book on smallmouth. They tend to think once you locate smallmouth they will stay in that vicinity for live.

They may move because of water rasing or lowering but once they find food and habitat they tend to stay in that area?
