    RE: Safety Cable

I understand your point but why should others pay for additional safety requirements and R&D because some people choose to run outside the markers and take their chances.

This is the same as anyone having a wreck in an automobile at their own fault. Any improvement to make these things safer will either cost you money or performance. Sure there are a ton of things that can be done but something will suffer. The best bet is to run the channel, they are marked and easy to follow.

Apparently you're perfect or something....never hit a partially submerged log in the channel either.

Or most of all, you haven't ever fished a tournament as a non-boater...

RE: pics of boat accident on KY lake

i went to ky lake easter weekend and fished jonathon creek. first time i had ever been in that part of the lake. we decided to leave and check out some bays on the east bank so i took off. i was looking for some channel bouys on the out and never saw any so i just cut straight across. we got about 3rd the way across and i looked and my fish finder and we were running in 5ft of water so i shut it down to figure out where the channel was and looked at the water and we were sitting in a stump bed. scared the holy crap out of me. i just dropped the trolling motor and kept going until we hit the main channel. i never did see any channel bouys at the mouth though.

There are no channel bouys at the mouth of Jonathan Creek to take you across because there is no channel there....the crossing channel is on the south side of the island that is just north of Jonathan Creek and runs northeast toward Sugar Bay...clearly marked with red bouys. The best thing to do before crossing the lake if you don't know it is to get out your map and look for the crossing channels...they are marked on all the maps I have seen here.

    RE: Safety Cable

Have done both. Never said I was perfect but I'm not willing to pay for extras on a boat that don't have to be there. Hitting partially submerged log is totally different from hitting a stump or other structure that is afixed to the ground. The log will have some give to it and will probably not have this big of impact on the boat.

This whole situation should open everyones eyes to pay attention and stay inside the markers. We were hoping by posting these pics and a description of what happened it would make people understand the dangers that are on the water not point fingers at boat/motor manufacturers. Boat and motor manufacturers should not have to fix and countermeasure issues that were caused by the drivers. I'm willing to accept any issue that I may cause but don't want to accept higher costs due to other peoples mistakes.

Right along with Dave's post the best thing anyone can do is look at a map before heading out. Jonathan creek has channel markers at the mouth and about 1/3 of the way back then the channel pretty much follows the south bank back to the bridge.

I've seen people all year cutting across these lakes anywhere they choose. It's a wonder that more accidents don't happen. Please use your maps and GPS's to see where the channel and cut acrosses are and then proceed with caution. If you don't know for sure don't run.

The mouth of Jonathan creek as well as several other bays (e.g. Bear creek/Moors) are dangerous when attempting to cross right now. You can easily find yourself in limited on no water in a hurry. I idle anytime I am out of the channel and utilize GPS to find the next one before opening up the motor. Study your maps and proceed with caution this time of year and wear those life jackets !!

    RE: Safety Cable

Well these extras may one day save your life, but who cares right?...Think of it as an insurance on your life. Some of us pay insurance for our entire life without having an accident, but you have to have it bottom line.

I'm sure there have been several situations like this that have occurred in the past and most likely caused some deaths. I know as fishing as a non-boater, you have really no say in how your boater drives. You may get paired with a total dumb@$$ who doesnt know how to drive a boat. Is that the non-boaters fault? No! And thier safety is at risk as well as the boater's. So to say that you don't want to pay extra because of someone else's accident is really ignorant. You pay for many extras if you own an automobile, or just about anything that has improved over the years! Many things have been done to promote our safety while driving. What is the difference with a boat???????? If it will save my life or anyone else's life one day I'm willing to pay. I personally think something should be manufactured and put on every boat. Do you not think boats have made progress over twenty years? They have, more safety features, and guess what you pay more!

So you don't want to pay more because of someone else's accident....Man, you are already paying for other's misfortunes and you dont even realize it....

Life isn't worth any money saved to me.
