yes I fished it when i first moved to nelson co, i only fished it twice because i found out the second time i went that simpson lake is owned by the Nelson Co Water District and you have to pay a fee every year based on the horsepower of your motor and it was gonna be around $200/year for me and if you dont pay the fee every now and then the game warden will set at the ramp in his truck and if you have not payed the fee you will get a ticket. i did not think that was worth it to fish that lake because there are sometimes you cant even put your boat in because the water level gets so low.

i live right by it and have fished it all summer. It has a bass fishery that is great crappie are ok but lots of small ones.the down side is the permit,it is enforced hard by the city police of bardstown, seen him every time i went, and yes they will frequent it at night also.this is the first year in a long time you can get a boat in it this late last year the end of june was it unless you had one to drag a ways and slide in,the permits are outrageou if you live out of nelson co,only reason i fish it is dad gets a senior one for his boat,it is based on hp and it is an aditional 50 or so for out of towners.I am just guessing but as many big uns as i have seen leave this year in livewells it may suffer.I had a few around 7 and alot of 4's.and i saw alot of 4 and 5's going home with the captors,i hate to see that it is nice to drive 10mins and be fishing with ky lake kind of fishin..hard to pay for the permit though and only get to fish in it a couple 3 months,if it turns dry it drops about 4-6" per day and at 4-5ft low it is hard getting in and out so it don't take long,it usually falls 8 ft over the summer.

Do they require a permit for small non-powered boats? I used to fish this lake years ago when it was down and you couldn't launch by dragging in a jon boat. Fishing was always pretty decent but I never caught any big fish. I remember it used to have a lot of weeds and we would catch bass on the weed lines with worms. I just bought a canoe and that could be a nice place to take the misses if I don't need a permit.

Yes,any boat has to have a stickerand you are susposed to get one to even walk the bank, didn't get a ticket but was caught doin that last year. There is no grass in it,i have never seen any in it,are you sure you arent thinking of willisburg towards springfield.I guess i shouldn't compare it to ky lake fishin but on a good or night it is common to get a few over 4,then sometimes you won't get bit hardley. It got a lot of pressure with gas high this summer and it staying up so you could launch big boats, that is why the crackdown on permits lots of complaint called in about non permit boats.last time i seen him on a sunday when he was taking out he had given 9 tickets, but he had already ran some of em off saturday.

No I am sure it is Simpson I am talking about but I am going back 25 - 30 years back when I was a teenager. My dad ponied up for the permit for a few years and during the summer there were extensive weed beds. The last time I fished it was in the late 80s or early 90s when the lake was chronically down. We jon fished it in the late fall when it was way, way down and we did pretty well on bass / crappie. Lakes change over time and I guess the weeds have gone away. I don't know if I would pay a permit to fish it from a canoe though.

I live south of Louisville so Simpson is only 20 - 30 minutes away. If I can find a week end I may have to look you up. These days with my kids in fall sports and working with boy scouts week ends are hard to come by. But that's why I am thinking of decent fishing spots close on those days where I can get away for a few hours.
