Topwater colors don't matter to the Stipers. If you can get a cigarette to stay on the hook and it will make a comotion on top when they are busting you will get hit. Shad color in anything that time of year is good for Smallies and Ky Bass when they are busting as well.

    RE: Cumberland colors

Had one of my best nights ever a couple of years ago with a Black Super Zara Spook night fishing main lake points. Smallies or Stripers were absolutely crushing it. I plan on night fishing some while I am down for the week on a chance it works again. I remember that day well, Saturday night, overcast ALL day long and I even called my best friend before leaving to tell him that the bite had to be great. Launched at 8pm and fished until 5pm the next afternoon non-stop. Smallies and Stripers at night, Stripers on topwater during the morning hours then caught a few more pulling planer boards plus caught a couple more in jumps that afternoon. If it was not for the 3 hour drive back and the fact that I was out of NO DOZE, I would have stayed longer.

    RE: Cumberland colors

If things don't pick up down there this year it won't matter. Cumberland is having a bad year, I'm semi concerned. If it wasn't for those two or three banner day's I had earlier in the spring I'd be almost worried. Have a pretty large network of guys I speak with that fish the lake more than I and they to feel the big C is having real down year. I'm mainly speaking of the bass fishing and not stripers so much, even though I think overall they to have been slow this year for alot of folks. Hopefully it picks up if I was you I'd be on Dale. To answer your question, any Zara Spook or chug baits in shad patterns and you are ready. Have seen times when stick prop baits will also catch alot of fish. Good luck if you go.

Mhall - How recently have some of your compadre's fished the lake? And were they fishing on the weekends or during the middle of the week?

As we all know, Cumberland is to dag gone popular in that it attracts a huge population of pleasure boaters, the Ohio Navy, etc...I'd say, or maybe I should say "I'M HOPING" Cumberland hasn't started kicking into gear until now, or maybe sometime within the next week or two or three anyway.

I fished it hard last weekend, day and night, and while I caught some fish I found it very slow. Same reports as others as well is what I had heard. That lake is notorious for getting going later than other lakes. Last year I waited for that magic fall bite I was used to happening and it seemed to never come. Hopefully this year is different. I know it's early yet and I'm impatient and trying to hurry it. Water temps from upper fifties to middle sixties has been my honey time in the past, we shall see. I'll hang tough and give it my best that's all a guy can do. Tightlines to ya Mark.
