"The River"
The river
A moody maiden
Silently flows, flowing along
Gently lapping, lapping, lapping
Morning light slowly reveals
Meadows dripping in soft dreamy mist
Dew laden webs sparkle in glistening silver
And the pileated rapping, rapping, rapping
The river
The custodian of historical events
The keeper of lost owerships and memories
Lost to senility, sediment and flow
Silent now are the voies...
The trapper, bargeman and logger
And the footsteps of the River Man
Washed away long ago
The river
Cold and emerald
Where beaver swim in the moonlight
And geese and butterflies on soft breezes fly
Where in meadows of wildflowers
Or on red tunneled banks
You can sit and contemplate
While watching the redtail in a deep blue sky
