    winterizing motor

I bought a boat this year that has a 1999 yamaha v max 200 3.1 fuel injected motor. The other boats I have owned all have been carburated, since this one is fuel injection what should I do to winterize it. I have it setting under a car port. Any info would sure help.

Mix stabil gas storage treatment into your gasoline on last trip of the year and run it enough to so that some of the treated gas ends up in engines the fuel system. remove the spark plugs and spray fogging oil( preferable) or your 2 cycle oil into each cylinder to coat the cylinder and piston. some might turn the engine by hand via the big nut on the flywheel to distribute the oil. put the plugs back in trim it down and its good till spring. I've done it in my mercury since 96 and its never failed me. knock on wood. I think I'm gonna get to run her on Sunday. You may want to put another ounce of oil in each cylinder and rotate the engine again manually before starting it in spring, just to make sure no metal to metal friction occurs during the first start. Oh, yeah, go ahead and drain the gear lube out of the lower unit and put fresh in so you ensure there is no water that can freeze and you'll also be ready in spring. If there is a water separation filter in the fuel system under cowling, you can take that filter off and drain it also, to get any water that might be present out. Dave

change lower end gear grease before winter really sets in. This will get rid of any water that may be in the lower unit and protect the lower unit all winter long. See a similar thread about winterizing motors in the IN forums.

Don't forget to fill you gas tank all the way up. This will prevent condensation in your tank. You don't want water mixed in with your gas when you take it back out in the spring.

    RE: winterizing motor

What about those of use that only have 6 gallon portable gas tanks and they are half full. Can't we just use stablil and be OK? Do I have to figure out the proper amount of oil for just a few gallons to top off the tank? How can I know how many gallons of gas it's going to take to fill the tank to the top.

Here is what I did. I got a plastic 6 gallon gas tank and mixed one can of 50:1 type engine oil to the 6 gallons of gas. Then I use this gas can to top off my metal 6 gallon gas tanks for my boat. Works like a charm.

I use to carry an extra metal 2 gallon gas tank in the back of my boat. It's long rusted and gone now. That was back in the days when I only ran the boat with one 6 gallon gas tank. But my boat will go a long ways on just 6 gallons of gas as it's only being pushed by a small 35 HP motor. I added another 6 gallon metal gas tank to the back of the boat years ago. So If I go upriver and run out of gas in the first tank I can be sure to get back to the launch ramp. IE I should have enough gas to return to the place I started or drift back down river to the ramp. LOL I would hate to run out of gas on the river and drift into the path of a river barge.
