Has anyone found a reliable cell phone service down at Rough river?
Thanks, Steve
Nextel Halfway works and Cingular works almost anywhere down there
cingular works on rough, but only works in a few locations on Nolin.
Thanks guys, just what I needed. I know that Sprint is worthless on the lake. Sounds like I need to give Cingular a try.
What about Verizon? does Verizon cell phone service work anywhere on Rough River?

I use bluegrass cellular and have no problems.
I fish Nolin alot and only Rough a few times, but I had Cingular and everywhere I fished I had service at both locations...Seems odd doesn't it.... I now have Cellular, somehow connected to Cingular, I have service everywhere I go, don't pay additional for roaming if I'm in a different area either.... Only thing you have to do is key in the area code for all calls for your service to work....No service plan (I like that very much), I got the 1600 minute plan for 60.00 dollars a month and an additional fee of 10.00 for my wife's phone, comes to exactly $ 77.77 each month on the dime......Not trying to puch Cellular, but they work.....
I have Verizon, and mine works all over Rough, but it will only get a signal in very few places on Nolin. I also think it has a lot to do with the phone you have, as far as picking up a signal.
First let me say I have cingular.
But, that being said, all the companies that offer the "no roaming" plans should work. The problem is you have to have newer phones, say a year probably at most. I know we had to buy new phones last year because the technology has changed.
Also, not all the phones are created equally. Some phones have better reception and better transmission because they have stronger transceivers. The stronger the transceiver, the greater the battery useage though, so those of us that look for the longest lasting batteries, often get weeker transceivers.
As an example of what I am talking about a couple of the guys I fish with also have cingular, and there were times they would have service and I didn't. However, after getting the newer phone, I get the same service everywhere they do.
Good luck on your selection of service providers.

Thanks for that input Danny. A friend of mine that I fish with at Patoka uses Cingular. I am presently with Verizon on the Pay as you go plan. But my phone is brand new or only two months old. It's got most of the new features. When we were at the South ramp on Patoka Lake I could get service and placed a call to my friends cell phone. He was standing right next to me and using a cingular cell phone. But his phone may be an older one. I got a good signal and his phone was not receving any signal at this location. Now he gets reception at other locations. It may be that his phones transceiver is older or the verizon cell phone tower for that area had a good line of sight for that particular location and his cingular cell phone tower didn't for that location. At a different location it may have been a different story. I'll ask him how long he has had his phone and see what he says. Technology changes pretty fast these days. I don't know what the USA would do if we ever lost power. It's would be back to the stone age. Keep your power dry and store up some flint stones for making fire guys. You never know what tomorrow may bring. Hopefully it will be a nice sunny day and the power will still be on!

Hey Moose.... to your remark:
""I don't know what the USA would do if we ever lost power.""
Down here we had a substation transformer blow the other morning, at 6 am. Our utility company was all over it and by 5 pm had a different one hooked up to replace the blown one. Then they threw the switch with all the lines still hooked up and the replacement transformer blew after a whopping 45 seconds of power. Finally at 10:30 am they had another installed, and this time they brought lines on line one at a time.
It was really great sitting by the flickering light of a hurricane lamp. Not enough light to read by, and for some reason we also lost the phone service so no internet.
but the best thing by far was the lack of light pollution. The skies were clear, low humidity, and man there were more stars in the sky than ever. We did lose a lot of groceries in the fridge. I thought they would have the power on, my bad. I could have put the food outside and it would have still been good.
But make no mistake about it, I am not in anyway criticizing the utility workers. My goodness, they worked all night trying to get our power restored. Man, we all owe them a thankyou. The really funny thing is just how often you or I continued turning lights on when I entered a room..lol. I was thinking for dinner we could throw some soup in the microwave..... ooops, that too is electrical.
I've come to the decision we need to buy an auxillary generator and have it wired back into the house for just such occasions, since living in the country they do happen quite often.

OH PS, sometimes, and I don't know why, when I am in what would have normally been a roaming area, I sometimes have to turn my phone off, then back on to get the signal. Just don't really understand that.
In case anyone doesn't know " The sim Card in your cell phone will work in just about any Cell Phone on the Market" If you got a nice working phone and need new service from a Wireless Company but want to keep your old Phone. Go ahead and keep it, just ask for the cheapest phone, the new compant has to offer that has the same functions as your old one that you want to use. Or get the cheapy free one most companies offer to get you as their customer. Believe me I'm not trying to puch " CELLULAR " but they do work great... Just save all the phone numbers from your old phone to the sim card and transfer it to the the new phone if you like or use the New sim card in your old phone.... It works, I've been doing this every time I buy a new phone or get a new service, which is often....I mean new service as in new phone plan, i.e. more minutes or add a line..... Any questions give me a shout....:)
