Whether you're using the swivel or not, I'm confused as to attaching the bobber. Do you put the line through both the top (taller end) and the bottom, or just one? I have some of bob's bobbers and I'm not quite sure how to attach them.

If I go without the swivel(which I do on a smaller flow), I'll attach the top of the float to the line and wrap the line around the bottom twice. This will hold the proper depth and put minimal wraps where the bobber and line come together.
When using the F-n-F in the creek it's different. If your wading or floating you stand the chance of hang-ups. Several hangups and reties in a row with the swivel can lead to high blood pressure and equipment breakage...LOL!!!!
In bigger water, such as Dale or Cland, I must reccomend the 3-way swivel.
This weekend I'll be on ole faithful with Big GW and Co(hopefully) and may go to the 1/32oz size with both weight and fly.

if you use a three way swivel tie your main line to one of the swivels tie your leader to another swivel and hook the bobber into the remaining swivel.
To answer your question if you are using Bobs bobber, which you should, hook the bottom (white side) directly to the third side of the swivel. If it stands up so you see orange only it means your jig is not touching the bottom. If you see white it is on the bottom or a fish came up grabbed it and is coming toward you.
Hope this helps,
Tom
I use the 3 way swivel with the 8 lb fireline and vanish 6 lb leader and have had no trouble with it.
I use a differant rig all together, and have good luck with it.
I use the 8# fireline as my main line to a barrel swivle. Not a three way. Just a regular barrel swivel. Then I use exactly 10ft. of P-Line florocarbon leader (6#) to my jig. I always start at 10ft. and go deeper when needed. I very rairly go shallower than that. I then attach the bobber by wrapping the fire line once around the top and the bottom. You will not hurt the interity of the fireline by wrapping it like you will mono. I start out right above the swivel, 10ft. deep, then if I want to go deeper, I just move the bobber up the line. If I go to say 13 or 15ft., the fireline is still 10ft. away from the jig, and the fish isn't going to see it. I have had no problem with the action of the jig either. It is just a quick way to change depth, without having to re-tye. Hope this helps someone.

Why can you not use a slip float like when crappie fishing.
use basically the same deal only a tube and slip float until crappie are 12 feet or deeper and i have caught many largemouth also and i use 7ft spinning rod and 6lb line,i also have caught smallies at dale doing this for crappie.
A slip float causes too much tension on the jig and it will not sink. It is not heavy enough to sink with a slip float.. PLUS IF the jig does make it down.. each time you work the bobber it will scootch up shallower each time taking the bait out of the strike zone.
TRUST the experts.. 3 way swivel is the way to go.
yes yes yes thats 3 yes,s for the 3 ring swivel-good call Jim its the only way to go--plus it will load up better for makeing that long cast seems that way to me...gl to all who learns that fnf fishing..
I told my buddy Cliff last weekend that I may try a barrel swivel and tie the fireline to one side and leader to the other but I was thinking of hooking the bobber also on the fire line side of the swivel as well. From time to time, WHEN I WOULD GET LAZY AND CAST SIDE ARMED NOT OVERHAND, I would get the swivel wrapped up on both lines. With the barrel swivel, I would still get to use the fireline, still not wrap the bobber at all, and get to hook the bobber straight to the swivel as well for the action of the bobber is better on the swivel instead of wrapping the bobber. I will try my above system this weekend and see if it works. I would bet if a 6 pounder or better comes in the boat, the "Elnut-Rig" will be born.
"I would get the swivel wrapped up on both lines"
I've had that happen before myself..........
Barrel swivel may work well. May have to match the weight up with the weight of the 3way....

The three way rig has nothing to do at all with the float n fly, the use of the rig has nothing to do for a smallmouth pattern. It is a summer time walleye technique or a winter striper pattern to catch stripers post cold front in the channel up the creek when they are are the bottom. The rest of the stuff from my standpoint for the 3 way is fluff.
