Fluorocarbon vs Mono

Trying to get some more info on fishing lines. I have always used mono, but have been reading about other lines (mostly flurocarbons or some type of hybrid). Can anyone recommend a good flurocarbon to try? Also, do the the bites really seem to pick up after switching from mono? From what I've read so far it seems that mono really handles better and I'm trying to decide if fluro is worth the switch. Thanks

There is a big difference in flouro and mono lines. I have used both and for the past year and a half have thrown nothing but flouro. The main difference in these lines is the stretch, mono has plenty of it and flouro has little. After using flouro for this long I simply cannot go back to mono, it feels like a sponge now. The sensitivity of flouro is unmatched (only to braid which is another category). You feel so much more with flouro simply because it has less stretch. It is also much more abrasion resistant. Honestly I think the talk of more bites with flouro is mainly a confidense thing. Whatever you feel most confident with is what you'll have the most sucess with. Flouro is a little tougher to handle than mono but after getting used to it, is much worth the effort. I have literally tried every type of flouro I can get my hands on....... Vanish, Transition, XPS, Seagar, Gamma, Sunline (yes the $50 a spool kind lol) and p-line. P-line is simply the best in my opinion. I have a bad habbit of setting the hook way too hard and P-line is honestly the only flouro I can use without breaking off on the hookset. Most people however do loosen up on the drag when switching to flouro becuase of the decrease in stretch in the line. I throw P-lines, 100% percent 20lb flouro which I think is unbelievable. I have never broken on a hookset and can hardley break the line. I can get hung up in a rock, put the trolling motor on 100% in reverse and the line will almost pull me out of the boat. 1 EXREMELY important thing to remember when throwing flouro is to always wet the knot. I dont mean just a little I mean literally drool all over it. Flouro has a tendency to weaken with the friction of rubbing itself when clinching the knot. P-line is not the cheapest by far but I am confident it is the best on the market. Give it a try and I think you will be happy, I cant promise you that you will ever be able to throw mono again though lol. Overall flouro does however allow you to detect more bites, and detect them much sooner than mono. Buy a spool of P-line, I think you will be satisfied. They have also just come out with a new version of their 100% flouro which is called Halo and is lime green for those who have problems seeing their line. Good luck. Drew Sadler.

seems to me the flourcarbon will fray easier in heavy cover,more so than my dinosaur line, big game,it is definitly more sensitive and if you jerk hard it will snap,specially flippin,short line out,don't use a broomstick stiff rod will help.it does seem like it lays loose on the spool and don't do well in winter at all.

The best Fluorocarbon line I have tried is Vicious. It is also the cheapest. It retails for $9.99 for 250 yards. They sell copolymer lines as well, and they are awesome.

I agree litterally with everything Drew just said and could not have put it any better. I will add that P-Line has a flouro coated line that is a co-poylemer, spelling, sorry, and it's great I use it all the time with good success. It's flourocarbon coated and not a true flourocarbon. Also remember flourocarbon lines aren't good for topwater chuggers or walking baits because the line sinks and it screws the action of the bait up. It's great for that reason on jigs and plastics, more of a quick vertical sink in those tight places. I still use mono in some limited capacities but Flouro lines are my first choice for sure.

I think I will give P-Line a try, should I get the Fluroclear, which is the co-poly construction or 100% flurocarbon? I know it's probably a preference thing. Do you know the difference between these two. Is the co-poly blend more visible?

I have always been a Trilene XL and Trilene Big Game guy (both mono lines). I have recently been experimenting with a couple of flouro lines. I have used Berkley Vanish Transition on a spinning reel but thought it was too stiff and didn't come off the reel very well. I recently fished with 10# P-Line Flouroclear on a spinning reel and loved it. It's smooth and very strong. I hung up a jig in about 25 feet and had to pull it straight up until the line broke (It was a "there's no doubt I'm going to lose this bait" kind of hang up). I was amazed at how little it stretched. Also, it was like I was trying to break 20# line. I will but more P-Line Flouroclear.

With Fluorocarbon you have so much more feel. Get on a small rock (pepples) bank wiht a carolina rig in mono and flouro and you be able to tell a big difference. I use seagar invisx and am very happy with it, P-line is good but has some memory on it after a while. Been wanting to try the new viscous line

if you are talking about light line 4 to 8 lbs then sunline is the best & the strongest & i have used every brand on the market. when i use heavy line i use p-line .

Since I fish light line for smallmouths quit a bit, I switched over to florocarbon. I do believe you get more bites and it handles well when the weather is cold. It is also more sensitive. The only issue is there is little or no stretch so you don't want to jar a fish when you set the hook. I use medium action rods and make a sweeping hook set making sure the drag is set correctly. As far as brand, I've used Vanish, Stren and BPS brand. Don't see a huge difference. Since I believe the line is harder for fish to see, I moved up from 6 lb mono to 8 lb floro. Hope that helps.

I used to break flouro all the time untill I switched to P-line. Havent broke a fish off since switching. Many good points in these posts though.

Drew the reason you are breaking fish off is your knot not your line. Fluorocarbon is much more abrasion resistance than mono and has more sensitivity.I like carbon pro the best. It last me longer but pline is good just a little more memory I just whish I could get carbon pro in 25lb test for flipping the bushes at Barkley lake.when you compare line strenth go by Dia. size instead of lb size then you will see the difference and which line is stronger.
