    high blue skies

    happy new year everyone,

i was at cc yesterday. water temp was 47 on the main lake. two little bites, but no takers. high blue skies, quite a bit of wind. fish were suspended.

question: when they're suspended, i know they're tough to catch. is it best to get a bait down right in front of their face and let it sit? if you're fishing a jig, will they go down deeper to pick it up or will they just stay in the suspended level?

i'm heading back tomorrow. thought about throwing a c-rig with a floating shiny rapala on about 24 inches leader. thought the weight would sit on the bottom then the bait would float up in the strike zone. any thoughts? also might pull out the dd16 and put a dozen suspend dots on it to make it sit there.

what's this fnf everyone's talking about? just kidding. :)

DYNATRAK: It has been my experience that when fish are suspended up off the bottom aways that you have to get it and keep it in front of them or slightly above them to get bit, either way you want to put it it equals one thing and that is a tough day on the water. Fish will not go down and pick a jig up off the bottom if suspended if you are below them. The rapala thing don't sound bad, but I believe I would try swimming a grub counting down or letting it fall some before you start your retrive to keep it in the strike zone or just above them. A swimming jig or combination spinerbait like a chatterbait might also be another soultion. People in my neck of the woods right now are doing good on a drop shot rig with a shad colored fluke or minnow type bait or a small creature bait like a baby brush hog for the suspended fish. Good luck...283

last time i was down there i caught some on a spoon in about 30 ft. they were suspended right next to the trees, take a couple spoons. you had to jig it right next to some trees and you will loose a couple that way. look around for drops in some of the shallower areas that drop mugh deeper.

thanks for the information, fellas. i will try both techniques next time i go.

i made it back down to cc today. of course the blue skies were gone with good cloud cover instead. wind was very light. many boats on the water. i picked up 3 and lost one at the boat with the biggest weighing 3.1. caught all the fish SHALLOW next to deeper water, say 18 to 25 feet or so. water temp was hovering at 48. fish came out of 5 foot or less, fish were on the timber or buckbrush or little cedar bushes.
