Reading all of the FNF posts lately it kind of got me thinking of giving it a try this past week end while down at Lake Barkley with the family.
Barkley is not exactly the apex of fnf fishing but I tried it any way - murky water, current, wind and all. Not bad results for the first shot - 2 keeper sized bass (one green, one brown), lost a good brown fish, and must have nailed a dozen drum up to 10 lbs. Wrestling a 10# drum on a noodle rod was interesting indeed. All of the fish were caught on main-lake rocky points with my float set at 9 to 10'. Which brings me to my question. Barkley is more of a tapered-bank kind of lake compared to the deep, clear lakes to the east and even fishing main-lake rocky points with depth most of my casts would end up "shallow" with the jig on the bottom and I would have to pull it out to get it to depth. Pretty obvious stuff so far but what puzzles me is that most of my strikes came while pulling the float out to depth. I figure most of my strikes came in 7 to 8 feet of water. Does this mean I should have tried shallower depths with the float set?
Interesting technique for winter. It is a blast fighting a good brown fish on a 10' noodle rod. I may have to try KY lake next.
