I just had a customer walk in and tell me he was affliated with someone in the legal standpoint, that has them taking Cumberland all the way down to the river channel.
Now bear in mind with all the rumors it's hard to believe everything even the truth.

I guess we'll know soon enough.

They are taking it down to 680, normal summer is 723 a difference of 43 feet, and intend to hold that or there abouts until repairs are completed. It's won't be necessary to lower it any more than that per the Corp as then it would not pose a flood threat or a dam failure possibilty. This is and has been their intention for months they just made it official yesterday as political pressure from down south was mounting.

For those who fish down river from the dam many questions arise: what will anincrease in temperature and potential change in oxygen do to harm the coldwater species; trout? what will low water in the tailwater prompted by a drought spell do to the food source? If the temperature rises to levels that trout can't sustain. what will Fish and Wildlife do to protect the fishery? We all want objective commentary on the fishery not only above and but below the dam.

This is certainly a more drastic and prolonged drawdown than was briefed by the Corps last year. Obviously they have found more of a problem than they expected to find. The Colonel is using words like "emergency drawdown"...the Army doesn't use these type words lightly. On the other hand I would expect they have things under control or they would have talked about possible evacuations. I also would and hope to expect that they are being overly cautious rather than less cautious.

Obviously this is going to have a very drastic effect on the local economy around the lake. For some small businesses it may be devastating. Let's all say a prayer for these folks and their families for the trying times they are going to be facing through all of this.

As I understand it, the conditions have not changed much, Katrina and the levies in NO have caused them to take a more conservative approach.
