I Was Wandering On Anyones Opinion On The Ideal Day Or Perfect Conditions For The Float And Fly.......bright, Sunny? Overcast? Snow? Windy? Freezing? Or Any Other.........
Personally the PERFECT conditions would be water temp hitting 50 for the first time, usually right after the turnover in early December, OVERCAST - absolutely no sun all day, light wind maybe about 5MPH to put a small chop on the water and it be spitting rain on and off all day.
Any day whent he water is below 50 and overcast is pretty good. This year is a bad year overall for the fly due to the fluxuation of air and water temps over the past couple of months. The first of November with the temps being 56-57 made me think it was going to be an early bite but just the opposite happened when we had the cold week the second week of December, best bite of the year for me, then we get 8-10 days of it being 60 degrees or better. Lake turnover took forever to happen and the fish became lethargic in not knowing what state the water would be in today versus yesterday or tomorrow. It should be picking up now and be a pretty good bite the rest of the way.
God to see you made it over elwood. How was the dale trip. Been looking for a report and have not seen hide nor hair of you. Hope the shjoulder held up well. At least with this cold spell here you should a least get one good solid month of F-n-F in.
Didn't go to Dale last weekend. Looking to go this coming weekend but will see if shoulder will let me go. Still in bad shape but getting better a little at a time. Then I do something stupid and pick up something that I should not and it takes a couple of steps back. Still have not gone to the doc and it is too late now so we will see. I think I can cast, but have not tried it yet.
There's a bunch of Hooisers down there at Horses Creek right now. Usually I'm there, but it wasn't in the cards this yr. The reports I've been getting has Holly Creek area about 47 degrees, 49 degrees at the dam area and the lake is on a SLOW rise...(lucky bastages).Didn't go to Dale last weekend. Fly bite is picking up. And by this weekend into next week, barring any massive rains, the F-n-F stage should be set for a while. I doubt I'll be able to get back down there before the Get-Together.
I haven't talked to Stephen in about a week so I don't know what he's been doing at the moment.

I talked to stephen the other day and he said the fnf bite has really picked up. The smallmouth are biting good and I plan on going down in about 2 weeks. Im going to laurel thursday( I finally got a day off work!!!!!) and the fish are hitting pretty good at laurel right now. Caught 9 last weekend. anyone want any info just send me a message or something. I will tell you about dale and laurel.
Hey fisherman0625, let me know how you do at Laurel. I think I'm heading down this weekend. I could use some info since I have not fished Laurel in years, and that was for trout. I plan to FNF for smallies all day. Any advice for me on where to fish, what kind of banks to focus on?
Thanks in advance!
Hey doublee
I totaly agree with elnutsmalljaws comments. I went to laurel this past Saturday and only caught 2 on the fly before having to leave early. My dad froze out on me so we left at noon. It was a clear sunny day so it was tough.
I got back up sunday and heading back in the icy rain which was a cloudy day of course and got into some nice smallies and kentuckys. To me it is most definately better on cloudy days with a little chop on the water.
I have some of this past sundays fish I caught on my website on the pictures
link. The pics where I am in the Blue Rain Suit are the ones from sunday.
I think it is going to be good from here on for the Float-n-fly for the rest of the time til the water warms back up. I just hope ithe water stays below 50 until June.
