What's everyone's thought of using Rhino Lining or something similar in place of a keel guard. Just a thought may be a little cheaper but not sure how well it would hold up. What's everyone's thought's....It may just be a crazy thought!

I don't know I put a Keel Guard on my boat and thought I had done a great job of getting it done correctly, but after only 6 months it started coming unglued.... So I don't know what to tell you....I sure ain't pleased with the keel guard staying put....
I looked into it, but it will not do the job a Keelshield or Hamby's will. They can spray it on any thing that will sit still, and it will stick. But it is hard. So when you pull up to a bank or something and hit a rock or whatever, it can't absorb the pressure and spread it out over a wider area like the keel protecters are designed to do. Just my opinion, Good Luck. P.S I have buddies that spray Rhino and the Line-X product if you need contacts.
Look into a Hamby's Light Duty. I put it on myself. It's heavier than a Keel Guard but not as beefy as the Hamby's that the marinas put on. If I'm not mistaked they sell for about $125.00... Dan
You can get a keel guard for around $150 and install it yourself. I'm not sure how that is considered expensive.

another thing to keep in mind is that a keelshield is designed with hydrodynamics in mind. Rhino lining because of its course design would hurt performance of the boat.
The 1st stage of either product is like glass, the texture don't come till the end by a setting on the gun. So if you want it smooth you can do it. But it will not be level the high pressure it comes out at causes what they call "PUSH" so their is waves in it. I have seen boats done and people are happy with them. None of the protecters are in the water when the boat is up on pad.
I believe I said it would be cheaper not that they were expensive. I understand now what the purpose of the Keel Gard is and that is to take the blunt force and spread it out. I was just looking at them as a source of protection not as a source of absorbing blunt force. I have heard of alot of guys having problems with the keel guards coming off. I don't know about everyone else but I can't afford to throw a $150.00 around everytime one came off. That saying if it would even come off. I guess I would just be playing a guessing game on how long it would stay on.
Thanks to everyone for the replies and comments.

I have an older boat and the same problem with the keel wearing from parking on the bank. It's either repair the glass or cover it up. I had the same idea a year or so ago and checked with a place on Glasgow that sprays the truck beds, They had never heard of doing it on boat hull or keel, and said they wouldn't guarantee it to stay on. I would still be interested in this if I knew it would stay put as the forward keel isn't in the water at planing speed anyway. Anyone out there know any more on this???????
