12/31/1969...What were you doing?

I was 7 years old and already fishing every chance I got with my Mom and Dad. Mom liked to fish better than Dad did. We had a camp on the point at Guist Creek lake for 17 years and that's where I lived until I discovered girls and cars, and other stuff, man was I stupid back then, LOL.

7 years old and trolling a white shyster behind a rented row boat from Bryant's Camp on Herrington. And hating my fisrt year of school of course.

Dang Cobra you just took me back ole buddy. One of the best ways we use to fish at Guist was to troll Shysters off the back of pontoons and catch the heck out of fish. We caught everything you can think of off of those inline spinners. Thanks man, you just brought alot of good thoughts back for me. Nice post it made me remember the good ole days, Thanks.

Let's see... Only God knew of me then, my parents hadn't met and I was 11 years from being born. I didn't come around until November of 1980 - man I'm getting old.

I was digging up nightcrawlers to fish the Licking river and some pay lakes, anxiously waiting to see my heroes walk on the moon. Hadn't yet realized how addicted to bass fishing I would soon be.

My father was a sophomore in high school. So im pretty sure back then I would be considered "That will never happen to me, Il be single FOREVER!"

On Dec 31, 1969 I was at the at the French Lick Hotel and cuddling up with a sweet little girl named GWEN. Boy does that bring back some good memories. New Year's Eve at French Lick Hotel. I think I have some pictures of that night and that trip in my scrap book.

Graduated HS this year.

Went fishing with dad that spring and fall. Fished KY lake. Caught lots of Large Mouth Bass on crank baits. Bomber coach dogs and water dogs were the favorite crank baits. Fished with fiberglass rods and Pflueger or Ambassador reels. Used braided line. These days the young guys think this is new stuff. LOL I still have three huge tackle boxes of more artificial baits than most bait shops carry these days. Except for Cabelas and BPS! :P

BTW we fished drop off and deep structure as well as underwater points and creek and river channel intersections in deep water. Dad caught many a small mouth using jigs on the bottom near deep underwater points.

We were one of the first to purchase and use the first retail fishing depth finders for freshwater fishing. The Lowrance (little Green Box). We had this little unit and used it to map the bottom of Cypress Bay on KY lake way back in 1967/68.

Even before the days of electronic depth finders or sonar units the old guys used a weight on a string to determine the depth.

I was scuba diving and studying the underwater structure of the lakes I was going to fish in 1969. That was back in the days when Kmart sold the scuba tanks and regulators. The first setup I used was just like the one that Lloyd Bridges used on Sea hunt. LOL That was the one with the twin air hoses. If you let the regular go above your head the air would flow out of the regulator. I took that unit back and went with the single hose two stage regulator after only a few weeks.

Back in those days we hid the little green box from other fisherman so as to keep the thing a secrete. LOL

BTW I am one of those old guys that lived back in the 1960's. I started fishing at the tender young age of about 3 years old. I actually would swim underwater and chase bluegills at that age in my favorite swimming lake. Today that lake is sitting on very expensive real estate surrounded by Expensive homes.

I was watching my lil' bro, who was 2 weeks old at the time. He was about the size and weight of the smallie I'd like to catch this winter.

1969 was around the time one of my most vivid childhood fishing memories occurred, on Elkhorn Creek of course.

I'm 7, and FINALLY big enough to be in charge of carrying the fish stringer. Why I thought that was an honor I'll never know. Toting around 20 fat redeye got really old after a while, so I thought I'd take a break.

We're in this circular, deep, still hole off the main creek. I start to put the stringer down, and Dad growls "make sure you tie it up GOOD!". Well, to a 7-year old, "tying it up good" meant sticking one end of the stringer AT LEAST 2 inches deep in the soft bank, which I did. After hanging out a good 4 seconds to make sure they wouldn't swim off <ahem>, I walked away to try to catch a redeye.

Next thing I hear is stuff I would get MY mouth washed out for, only it's Dad, so he's safe. "&*#@#%&*#$#$#@, look out there, son!" I look out in the middle of this still hole, and about every 10 seconds see flashes of silver breaking near the surface. Our own little private Redeye Parade!

One by one, the fish nearest the end of the stringer would work its way free. There were 20, then 19, then 18, and it wasn't too long before the Redeye Parade was over.

And so was our fishing trip. It was a while before I got to carry the stringer again.

I had just turned 9, was living in Newark, DE, and I remember thinking how cool it was that we were actually about to start a whole new DECADE!

Wow, how the years have passed...I was playing with my new G.I.Joe, the blonde haired one that had the scar on his face and his hair was blonde and fuzzy to touch....He had all the equipment for a Medic, so of course I doctored him up and my sisters barbies... If some of you remember back that far, Avon was real popular and mens aftershave came in various looking bottles, from bottles shaped like cars, trains, and one in particular a motorcycle...Well this motorcycle was now my G.I. Joes new ride and I pushed that thing all over the place with him on it.... Hope you enjoyed my little story, cause I sure got a big smile thinking back to those good ole days....
