Explosives to be used on barge
The Courier-Journal
Salvage company workers plan to use charges this afternoon to break apart a stranded barge in hopes of freeing it from McAlpine Dam, where it has been stuck since Jan. 16.
Under the salvage plan, the shape charges, which aim explosives in a specific direction, will be directed through the hull in order to cut the barge in two, said Bob Faletti, a spokesman for the Army Corps of Engineers.
One half is expected to go through the dam and then down river, where it is to be retrieved by another barge, Faletti said. A cable will be attached to the other half so it can be reeled in by another barge.
The barge has been stranded near the dam’s Gate 2 and has not been interfering with commercial river traffic. It was part of a 14-fleet tow that broke up Jan. 16 when cabling holding the barges together broke. Four of the barges separated from the tow. The three others barges were previously recovered.
The barge stuck at the dam lost a cargo of liquid fertilizer, but it didn’t cause any major environmental damage. The recovery of the barge had been hampered by high water.

I think I will pass until the weather warms a bit. It is my understanding from reading Bargemasters that they typically go on a feeding frenzy when the water temps reach the mid 50's. They really feed up until the spawn, which around here is typically around the first full moon in April.
Better snug down the draq before you set the hook on that one!![]()
I also heard that after being in the water for so long they leave a ( RUSTY ) taste in your mouth....lol
Not sure if the barge has anything to do with it or not (I'm still new to fishing the Falls), but I went and fished the Falls Wednesday afternoon and didn't get a bite. There were probably four other guys down there and none of them had caught anything either.
Gotta horse'em a little. Keep them out of the main current.
I was down today for A bit at the falls ,it was slow untill the water gets down and stays down or the water goes up and stays up it 's going to be up in the air I don't like the water yo-yo ing.The sauger will come!!!They keep playing with it becauce the barge...The charges didn't work so I guess we're stuck with the problem till they figure it out unfortunally...I ended up puttin my boat in at wesport and fishin 18 mile creek end result 1 sauger about 12 in .and a mudpuppy the same size...
I figure 50 pound spider wire will work with a tight drag and a 3lb lead head jig!!!
Jackster- How's it been going? How is Red and the rest of the family? Please tell everyone hello from Coach P and family. Glad to hear that you are getting the chance to fish. I know what work and family can do to a fishing schedule. I don't see how you can fish right now. Don't get me wrong, I fished until 35 or 40, but when it went into 20's and teens, I started cleaning reels and reorganizing tackle. I applaud you! I'm hoping to get out as soon as it gets slightly stable, so I will give you a call and I hope you will do the same. I wouldn't mind hitting a tourney or two. Take care and don't work too hard.-Coach P
