O.K. you are right to a certain degree. I have extended married into family down there that depend heavily on that lake. I also know alot of good people down there that will be extremely adversly affected from a dollar and cents stand point by the lake being lowered to 650. I would never put my own selfish pleasures ahead of life and limb, or some poor souls livelyhood to put food in their family's mouth. Jim you seem awfully certain that this won't happen, I wouldn't be so confident, from the scuttle butt coming from the lake area that I'm getting. 650 is coming it's just a matter of when. Oh and by the way, I rarely take totally to heart what the Curious Journal writes because that is one of the most liberal, bias, homer, hyped and overated news source in the country bar none.

Not for me or you Jim but for folks who have lived in that area and made the tourism business their life.....not so good. Alot of jobs could be lost (IF the lake has to be drawn down to 650 or lower) Not enough factories between Somerset,Jamestown, and Louisville to make up for those lost jobs(They are all in Mexico).
I'll also say this, I LOVE the lake and being on it. I want it to be OK for my own personal reasons but I'm only selfish. I've fished it for years but it's not my home....some folks depend on this lake for their living. I'll say a prayer for them all and wish the best for them. We need to show these folks our support as Kentuckians and fellow outdoorsman. Well good deal then, you and I have a lot in common.....I get my MEng in May from U of L's Speed School of Engineering and then my P.E. after a couple more years of the required work experience.....

Where do you fish at? It's a wonder our paths haven't crossed yet.....

Can you explain what the original concern was about lowering the lake below 680 and a possible collapse of a cave underneath the dam??? I read somewhere that it was agreed that a lowering below 680 would increase the potential for a collapse of the underlying caverns...............is it that they are grouting those caverns right now to prevent the collapse so that a lowering to 650 can be done?

From what I've read, the lowering to 650 will not happen until next year. The COE issued a letter to surrounding water districts and the power plants that a lowering to 650 is in the future and that they need to make alterations to be prepared for it come next year.

according to a story on lakecumberland.com, that is not a definite. Only eleven water supply users received a letter requesting them to lower their water intakes to elevation 650. The recommendation to water supply users is based on contingency planning by the Corps of Engineers in the event that further lake level reductions are necessary.

Sounds like everyone is jumping the gun here.

Very good post Andy and Thank You for it. This is only temporary not for eternity. The lake will be there for us to use regularily once again. Lots of other lakes to fish. I think minus the stripper posts Dale Hollow has more posts then Lake Cumberland so where is all this bickering coming from. I think the Corp needs to do watever they have to do to save the dam. Bet if if some of yall lived downstream of that dam next to the river you would be saying drop it to 610. Thanks again Andy.

It's good to see some professional engineers stepping up to the plate and explaining what's going on.

The saftey of the dam and those living downstream from the dam is the most important issue. Saving the **** is paramont to anything else.

Congrats on your up-coming graduation. I know it takes a great deal of time, work and patience to get through the last year; but, it is well worth the time and trouble.

I fish Taylorsville quite a bit due to living here in Louisville. I just started fishing the Monday morning tournaments last year and might fish some of the Friday nighters also this year. I also fish Rough, Patoka, Cumberland (night time strippers/walleyes) and Dale Hollow when my partner can get away. I blame my partner W. Tucker for getting me involved with the T-ville tournies, stripper fishing and the Dale get-a-ways, lol.

I really hate to address specific issues concerning the dam problems and/or repair since I have not read or studied any of the actual reports/findings. My earlier response was simply to inform (and partially out of frustration) readers to remember the real reason for our lakes. However, concerning your question as to the concern about the caverns, you have to remember water is an incompressible liquid. When in a closed container it will exert equal pressure on all directions. So the water in the caverns is probably helping to stabilize them. If the hydrostatic pressure is lowered too much without additional support they could collapse. However, as I said, I am not an expert on the specifics so I am only thinking out loud (i.e. not legally binding, lol).
