Hummingbird 797c2 SI combo

Looking into getting one of these units for my boat... Only problem is I don't really know that much about them... I only maybe fish a few small tournaments a year, mostly pleasure fish. But really like this unit for some reason...

can anyone give me some heads up on the unit, before I buy it...Are they kinda easy to install and use.... I fish mainly the Ohio River, Nolin and Taylorsville Lake...But will probably go to some different lakes this year as well...

I want one too,what will sidescan do to other boats in the area? Talked to a rep. at the Louisville show it looked good.He said you could mount it on the troll motor but will that have to much movement on the screen?

You can see something right or left move the cursor to it and make a waypoint,without going over it!

Here is some information on the use of these side scanning sonar units.

First it's important to know that these work best when traveling over 4 mph. And the transducer and boat have to stay fixed and moving in a straight line. Mounting the transducer in a fixed unmovable position with a clear side view of both sides of the transducer is best.

Transom mounts are best and the motor should not interfere with the sound waves that go out in all directions to both sides of the transducer.

If you don't go in a straight line the signals are harder to interrupt.

Mounting the transducer to the trolling motor would be detrimental to the side scanning use of this unit if the transducer swivels freely. Now you can use the regular depth finder functions of this unit if you could mount it to the trolling motor. If you could figure out a way to keep the trolling motor in the water and in a fixed forward position so that the side scanning transducer if secure and in the right position then it may work. But I am not aware of any Humminbird transducer mounting brackets for this side scanning unit. They may have one that I don't know about yet.

Man if I had an extra $1000 bucks I would have one of these units in a heart beat. When you learn to operate these baby's they will show you the bottom of the lake like nothing else on the market. The only better way to figure out the bottom of the lake's topography would be to drain the lake and take a helicopter ride over the dry lake bed while taking movies.

I went to Hummingbird.com and they do not list the 797c2 SI combo unit... I have read on a Yahoo.com group board and someone stated that you need to buy an additional Transducer in order to use the unit properly...Is this true, do you know....

I already got a Lorance X51 in my dash console, do I need to take it out completely in order to use the side unit effectively...

I guess I need to go see someone who has one installed already on their boat or a dealer that is familiar with the unit....

I just want to be sure of the unit 100% before I invest this much money for a unit like this.

As info www.planetgps.com has the 797c2 SI Combo Nav. Map Pak unit for $ 1045.95. BPS has it listed for $1199.00, a big difference if your looking. The regular 797c2 Si Combo without the Nav. Map pak lists for $ 980.00...

P.S. Still researching for all the info I can get prior to purchase.

These units are pretty easy to install. We put one in a friends boat a couple of weeks ago. They give an option as to the transducer that comes with the unit, all he did was choose the transom mountable one. We mounted his unit on the on the top right of the outside of the drivers console, just drilled a few holes. Tap-drilled a couple of holes for the GPS receiver and wired everything up. Took about 25-30 minutes total. Easy installation, and a great unit. I like, as well as my friend.
