I was wondering about some stuff about Greenup Dam. I live about a hour away from it and really don't wanna waste the 2.50+ gas to get there to find out I got the wrong stuff or the water looks like Noah should be coming down the river soon.
What's the cut off for fishing from shore gauge height wise on the tail water? Right now it's at 30 feet according to the USGS site.
Now I understand sauger like pink, yellow, white grubs on like 3/8 once jigs but what type of line should I use? I read somewhere 4 lbs test but I'm thinking thats a little small...this coming from a guy who fishes for carp on 4lbs line no less.
And last but not least is there anything else I should know about fishing there from the bank?

I fished the Greenup tailwaters for several years. If the level is much above 20 feet it makes fishing difficult. I like a 5/16 oz jig that I make myself with at least a 2/0 hook. I like natural colors like smoke or amber when the water is clear. When the water is murky you can not beat chart. or orange with a little red. The BPS triple ripple grub in tomato core is excellent in murky water. When there is alot of current I will also use two 1/4 oz jigs and use a bright grub on one and a natural colored grub on the other. Don't forget to use a fish attractant like Yum shad. You can also tip the grub with a bass minnow. You have to get the jig down to the bottom most of the time. Don't forget to take plenty of leadheads because you will lose several snagging into the rocky bottom. Good luck! I would wait until the level is below 20' to fish the Ohio side. You can fish the Kentucky side behind the short lock when the water is above 20'. I know alot of guys that fish the KY side and catch plenty of sauger. I prefer the Ohio side.
