    Quantum Physics and Fishing

Did anyone read the interview in Bassmaster Magazine with Rick Clunn and his approach to fishing and applying quantum physics??? It all sounds like hippie talk to me, but the more I think about it the more sense it makes. Clunn talked of taking a minute or two before and during the tournament to meditate and clear his head.....he said he "learns more during that short time than anything he does during the day"......

Maybe that's how he keeps his cool out there and how he is able to pick up on things others don't. Maybe stopping and clearing your head is what it takes to get past all of the drama and pressures that go with each tournament at that level. I'm just curious if anyone else takes such an approach? It sounds like a really simple thing to do, but I wonder how many people actually do it! Just take a minute to completely stop what you are doing, set your rod down, close your eyes for a few minutes, completely clear your mind, and try to read what the fish are telling you! I know I'm guilty of not doing that! When I'm out there I'm wide open and constantly trying different things and trying to apply what I've learned. However, Clunn says knowledge only takes you so far and that you must listen to what the fish are telling you, that sometimes it's your knowledge that keeps you from following your instincts..........

Did anyone else read the article?

I read the article and here is what I have concluded: Clunn is obviously too smart for his own good or anyone elses for that matter, and he is a hippie......
With that being said, a lot of the things he said did make sense. I think the point he was trying to get across is to follow your instincts when fishin, if you have a gut instict to do something, follow it. Clear your mind of distractions and keep a positive attitude. If your fishing with a negative attitude your not going to apply yourself as much as if you had a positive attitude. Do what feels right and don't overcomplicate things. Either way, he is still a hippie lol.

I don't know anything about quantum physics, but my dad meditated every day. He called it a nap. He was a good fisherman.

Unfortunately, I don't get BassMaster mag anymore. Would like to read the article as I've studied quantum physics a bit and would be curious to see what association he has made. Will have to borrow one from a buddy.

But, on the subject of dropping everything, I've done it quite frequently. It's easy to get wrapped up in the moment, especially in the middle of a tourney if things aren't going well. Usually I can tell when I'm forcing things. At those times, while I don't meditate, I will set everything down, grab a pop and a sandwich out of the cooler and just sit on the front deck for 5 or 6 minutes to chill out and think about what I've tried and what I might be overlooking. Doesn't matter how big the tourney is either. Have had several partners comment about it, too

Probably not for everyone but I've found the less "worked up" I get about everything, the better my results tend to be. I've pretty much gotten to the point where I just try and enjoy the experience, regardless of the outcome.

LOL! That's funny right there! I do the same at times. Seriously, i do know some guys who have a theory every 2 minutes on what the fish are doing and run around like crazy trying them to the point that nothing gets done.

Clunn does a lot of things differently from others, including meditation, yoga, trying to get in touch with his inner self etc. He has even said that twice he had visions the night before a tourney and caught fish exactly the way it worked in his visions. BTW, he won both tournaments.

I have been a press observer in the boat with Clunn and he is all about concentration. Doesn't talk much or anything. That being said, I watched him at an FLW tourney on Kentucky Lake catch his last fish just outside the off limits area with just a couple of minutes left. That fish helped him to make the top 10 cut even though he wasn't on fish.

All in all, he does a lot of stuff that seems strange, but it is hard to argue with the results.

From what I am seeing, it sounds a lot closer to metaphysics than quantum physics.

Now I don't know much about quantum physics, but he was saying that everything is connected. He was saying that if he gets cut off by another boat, it happened for a reason - that reason being that he's not supposed to fish there. If he gets hung up, it happened for a reason......he was saying that you must figure out the reason it happened - an example was that he got hung up, and in freeing his lure saw a submerged log a few yards away that he wouldn't have seen otherwise....he made a cast around the stump and hung into a keeper....that kind of stuff.....

I think I'd like to spend the day with the guy and see how he is.....it could be his mindset that got him the title of bass fishing's greatest angler of all time.....

After reading that, I'd agree with jcb in that it sounds more like metaphysics than quantum physics. But in principle I agree with the thought process. My old team partner and I had a similar laugh over that approach. It was called "the window of opportunity". It occurred anytime the guy in front hung his bait and had to go in and get it. Instead of getting upset because of having to waste some time and go get the bait, that created "the window" for the guy in back to make a nice shot parallel down whatever part of the bank he chose (usually the part we hadn't quite fished yet). If it resulted in a keeper, the ribbing didn't stop for a while

This same partner had another little quirk that I eventually learned to appreciate. Seemed he had this predisposition for bobbers. Didn't matter how important the tourney, if he found a "run away" bobber along the bank somewhere he'd drop everything and go and get it for his collection. After he passed away, I decided to adopt the same philosophy, partly as my way of remembering him, but more importantly as a reminder that tourneys aren't 'life and death' affairs, and that it doesn't hurt to take a minute out of your day, no matter how hectic, to enjoy the moment.

Keeping a positive attitude is important for success in all things you do.
    You can control your thinking,heartbeat,breathing.
Is praying,Giving thanks. Quantum Physics? Some think its out of the
    realm.
