Tach Help Please????

I Just Bought A Used 2000 Triton Bassboat. Was Told Tach Meter (rpm Guage) Was Broken. Guy At Shop Said It Was The Regulator. Ordered New Regulator, Then Said It Was Tach Again. Had To Order A Systems Check Tach. Came In, Installed It, No Luck. It Goes Through The Checks And Lights Come On And Beeps But Doesnt Read Rpms. I Have No Idea What Else It Could Be??? I Would Appreciate Any Help If Anyone Has Any Advise? Thanks.

What year and HP is the motor? If it is a V6 then it has 2 regulators on it and you could have just moved your wires to the other one. If you have a new tach also then I would think it would have to be the wiring between them.

I know little about mechanical issues, and not sure who you are using, but I too have a triton. I have an 'o2 TR21 with a Merc Opti 225, and my tach is reading higher than the revolutions really are. I had this problem once before, and my mechanics said then it was probably my hub, because the tach jumped up and down. I replaced the hub, or should say the shop did, and my tach worked. It started again, only this time the tach did not jump, just reading way higher than it should, almost one thousand rpms too high. My rev limiter has never had to kick in, but I replaced the hub, and at first it was fixed... for about two trips, then began again. Since I don't run wide open, I've been slow about fixing it.

I know this doesn't help much, but I guess my thinking is that the instrumentation is dependent upon the motor. For example, Merc guages vs. what you might have with Yamaha.

I too would appreciate any thoughts. I was excited to just change a hub, don't expect me to do any difficult wiring stuff. LOL

I had the same problem . Try reaching under the dash while you are running and wiggle the wires. My problem was as simple as a wire loose. Could be a wire on either end.

it sounds like a loose connection.you may have a bad pin in the plug where it plugs to the back of the tach,the dealer should have been able to test the regulator hope you aren't paying for the parts swapping.if that plug doesn't stay perfectly tight it won't work,they will corrode up too.
on the other post,,if your engine is over revving your rev limiter will kick in,are you sure the hubs are spun?mark the hub and prop with paint or a small punch in line on each,run it then check it to see if they are still lined up.
most of the time if a hub spins one time and gets hot you can accelerate full throttle on hole shot and it will spin they don't fix themselves,a few times and you can see the rubber messed up if you remove the prop,my uncles vmax was reading 6900 and the dealer sold him a bigger prop,saw him coming,it still messed up and it never hit the rev limiter.
