    Bass on KY Lake

Heading to KY Lake Good Friday for some fun fishing. What will the cold front do to these fish? Will they shut completely down, pull tight to shallow cover or move to the first drop? Can I still catch then on a reaction bait, crankbait, jerkbait, rattle trap, spinnerbait or will I have to slow down with a jig, texas rig tube or C.R. rig creature or french fry?

Thanks. Looking forward to just getting out and having some fun.

My brother and I were down there this past Friday and Saturday. Friday we caught 3 - a 5 lber and 2 3 lbers. Saturday caught 3 more... 2-3lbs. Had a blast too. We were coming out of Kenlake Resort and hitting a little bay on the right side of the lake in the very back, with chatter baits. Good times, can't wait to go back!

I will also be down there good Friday and was wondering the same thing with the cold front coming through on Wednesday. Anyone have any idea on what the bass might do with the front? I'm hoping they don't shut down completely.

    Re: Bass on KY Lake

I would expect this cold front is going to slow things down for a few days. I expect the water temps to drop some with the north winds and night temps in the 30's. Here is how I will be approaching the change in conditions:

The best bite has been shallow for the past week. After the front passes I will check the shallow bite paying particular attention to seeing if the bait fish have moved out deeper ...this is what I would expect to happen but you have to physically check it to be sure. It shouldn't take long to figure that out...if the bait fish have backed off as I would expect then I will move back out onto the lead in banks and/or first drop offs the flats until I find the baitfish...once located it becomes a matter of finding cover in those areas and fishing tight to the cover with finesse baits and fishing slow. Everything I am telling you is textbook fishing after a nasty spring cold front when your bass have been shallow. I have seen few instances when this scenario is not the case but there can always be that one exception when the baitfish and bass did not read the textbook so that is the reason for checking the shallows first for the baitfish then just back tracking to find them.

Dave, given the forecast, how long would you expect the fish to be out of the shallows? 2 or 3 days or most of next week? Also, I've had some friends strike out on the crappie since last Friday. Is this a trend due to spawn or are folks still catching good numbers?
