Well guys and gals we have been promising the 2 granduaghters a fishing trip and days off and things just have not been working out, so tonight after the 8 year old got out of class and her mom got off work we decided on a quick pinic bank fish for an hour or so. Went down to Beaver Creek ramp where the water is just now getting deep enough to launch. We attacked a bucket of KFC and headed for the bank well our 2 year old had just gotten her first rod and reel last week, so big Sissy had to have her a new one too. The shad were popping every where, I thought the small hybrid were after them and expected to take one or two, I baited up the the girls rods and the 8 year old cast in and bang she hits a 3 lb channel cat and has a great fight on the zebco 33 with 8lb test. while this was going on the 2 year old had set up her folding chair had a coke on one side on a stack of flat rocks she had made in to a side table and a chicken leg in her mouth and she threw out her rod, a very nice pink cinderilla from zebco. She had been practicing casting all week and for the most part it was cast to the front. Well about 2 minutes later her float disappered and she yelled nanny a fish has stole my float can I go get him. Of course we are all yelling crank it in baby, and she starts to crank and the fish pulls back and she yelled you got my float you aint getting my rod fish and jerked back. then she really started cranking and the drag started playing out and we all thought this is not a blue gill. She started getting tired and ask her nanny, you hold the pole and I will crank ok nanny. and about 5 minutes later there lay a 5 and a half pound channel catfish nearly as long as the girl who caught it. We only got to fish for thirty minutes with several missed hits, the thunder storm was coming in and there was lighting, and talk about a protest those girls were on a hot streak and you are not supposed to quit when they are biting like that poppy!!! So if you want some meat fish for the freezer the channels are hot and ready on the Barren, this is one of the most under used fisheries on the lake and there for one of the best opportunities to take the kids out and get them turned on to fishing. and the best part is it is better to fish in the late evening when everything else is slowing down the heat is letting up,a good time to kick back and count the stars and just talk and if you catch a fish well that is just gravey.
