What is the best time to fish these? Is it when there is a higher water output or when there is a lower output? I am more specifically concerned with Barren River
hello there Barren is a good tailwater although a few miles up the road is nolin river tailwaters. now thas my favorite place to fish. durin this time of year I catch almost everything. take a bobber an some minnows an throw it in the box around 3 foot deep. crappie whitebass bass catfish drum everything will slam it . thas my favorite tail water rig. now on down you can catch trout on rooster tails. I fish taylorsville tailwater to an the same there to. minnows are the bait although for them catfish at nolin chicken liver an taffy worms will get catfish.
There as many opions about the water flow at Barren River as there are fisherman. As for myself, I have had my best luck when there is a decent flow, like 3 tenths on the by pass or a little more. I have seen those who liked it better when the water was slamming down so hard it would wash rod reel and fishermen all three. 15 years ago there was not a better fishery in the whole state and there are plenty of trophies are still in there.use the usual baits minnows, worms, guts or bad chicken liver. just be sure to hold your rod even a 1pound hybrid can drag a old guitar rod off a boat in a heart beat.
