Report: Cland Monday Night 28 May 07

We arrive and launched from Alligator II's new ramp at 7 pm Monday night. The ramp is in great conditon. Thanks Corps of Engineers! Much parking available and vice Jamestown, its all on the same level as the ram, no hills.

Fished main lake with boards at mouth of Wolfe, in first 2 turns of Wolfe, and Lilly with boards with shiners at depths ranging from 20 to 40 feet, no hits, couple bumps that looked to be bass, but no hookups from 8 to 10 pm. Very few shad up and flipping in lower half of Wolfe, and or Lilly and no surface pops noted thru 1 AM. Went to Greasy, and hears some shad, in first major creek bend near pontoon dock. No top water hits, few pops thru 3 am. However, shad under a slip bobber down 4 feet thru 1 foot from the banks netted 4 Short Stripers, and a GAR! Trick is to thrown TIGHT to rocks, be sure bobber is suspending bait, after 3-4 minutes waiting, just shake the rod hard, or short jerk on rod to create any type surface/bobber noise, then hang on for the hit. 4-5 AM fished the point dead between Jamestown and State docks, few pops lots of shad, and a surface hit on a Redfin netted an 8 lb Striper. 5-6 am, bottom fished same location right where the rock walls gave way to stone covered banks with just a catfish, channel to show for it. BUT, at 6-630am, massive baby shads were seen in schools dead on the banks starting 200 yards out and following the bank headed for main lake. As we were beached, they approached and swam under the boat heck bent for main lake, and dead on the bank save instances when they scatter due to a gar, catfish, or Striper blitz to the bank. We headed out and stopped in Wolfe, first major left turn, long banks left side, and bottom fishing there and saw the same big shad clouds along the banks, some top water blow ups I'd attribute to Large mouth, Smallies, and Stripers. Zora Spook excited the bite of a 5 pound large mouth when walking and casting from the banks while boat was beached with botttom lines out. Bottom lines netted a short Striper on shiners bottom fished.

    Summary:

    a. Alligator is alive and well, use it, Lake Pointe motel has great shiners.
    b. Watch the banks in the creeks just a sunrise and be prepare to present topwater.
    c. Night bite was slow, but can produce if you are willing to do some unorthodox things to make it work.
    d. I would bet the youth class of shad are headed to main lake and that in the next one to two weeks you will see isolated and unpredicable Striper surface jumps when ever the Stripers can pin the buggers up against some structure. I'd watch teh first couple bends in creeks from the main lake out to the main lake points they attach to.
    e. Beware of Allegator II pizza with everything on it. Especailly if you take it out with you, let it get cold and eat it a 3am. The good news, once it gets cold save 2 slices. There's ample grease to lube 1 wheel bearing per slice.

Final note, if low lake water is bad news, I like Allegator 2 when there's bad to be had. The ramp is great, and I can park with in feet of the launch, and have breakfast with in yards of ramp out. I hearby vote for the water to stay away.
