I read post on this board a lot but don't post much. Seems like a lot of good guys here. I have had good encounters and bad like you guys are talking about. It would depend on how I was asked. But the bottom line is if they are good enough to be pros they should have other spots to fish until the guys leave. I can say I have had more bad encountes than good when it comes to fishing etiquette. But that's just me.
I have been fishing Tournaments for several years. Some large and some small. I also help run a small tournament sometimes. I was fishing one last friday night and 2 guys who appeared to be just fishing for fun came between us and the bank as we were fishing a hole and had been for some time. They came within 40 feet of us and did not even look up at us. We had to stop casting and wait for them to go by. They were either stupid or jerks and it was pretty obvious that they were not tournament fisherman. Oh well, it was just part of it. I also have been fishing a tournament and a fellow tournament angler has done the same thing. I guess my point is that there are jerks that fish tournaments and jerks that do not. It has something to do with the way they were raised so maybe we should blame the parents not the jerks. Either way its not a good idea to do this. Right or wrong I saw my father take a large machette and chop up 3 guys poles, their lawn chairs and chase them off for throwing in where he was fishing in a pay lake. It can be dangerous sometimes if you do it to the wrong guy.
Food for thought.
If we are going to take the tourny guy versus fun fishing guy approach then noone can win. Like many of the guys on here i am both and i respect the water and other fisherman while doing both. I have been done wrong while doing both and i bet it will happen again....even on the boat ramp! That's an entire thread in itself....
Lots of differing opinions here.
The guys had every right to say no. I probably would've backed off and watched the pro, maybe learned something. But I know when/where the big tourneys are going on Barkley and KY lake and try to avoid them by going to the far end of the other lake that day.
I was at Santee Cooper during last year's Elite Series Event and had one creek all to myself all week long. I'd watch blast off, then I'd go fish and make it back in time for weigh in to watch. The last day of the tourney, I had 3 pros in my creek. None of them asked me to move aside. They were all very nice and talkative about their day. Takahiro was very nice, just not talkative and I'm sure that was just language barrier. He was the closest to me and just happened to follow me through the cut in the pads that I was fishing. In no way did I hinder his fishing. There were bedding fish everywhere and while i caught lots of nice fish (my best 5 were about 19 lbs each day) Most were buck bass and I couldn't get the really big females to bite. Tak was following me catching those big females, flipping the biggest tubes i've ever seen. he was probably behind me for 45 minutes before i realized he was there and I very slowly went back around behind him as there wasn't a lot of maneuver room for 2 boats.
either way, its the angler's choice to give up the water. with me, its all about the pro's attitude and how i'm feeling that day.
