Sharp Hooks!

Stuck a treble hook in deep past the barbs last night. It was in the back of my knee in the cartlidge/muscle part. I made the mistake of trying to pull it out which made it worse. After a half hour of unsuccesful pulling I had to go to the ER to ease the pain of the removal. They had to push it through and cut the barb. Anybody else sink a hook in themselves? If so I feel your pain.

I had a friend of mine do the same thing. He was striper fishing and tried to remove a sliver from its mouth when it shook its head. It sank the treble hook in the palm of his hand. He had to cut it from the bait and could not get it out. He took pliers and tried to pull it loose, but it would not come out. He wrapped it up and fished the rest of the night. The next morning went to the E.R. and had to have it cut out.

Yes been there and done that more than once--ouch it does hurt--Two times had to run it back through and snip off the old barb ouch

I had a jigging spoon pop free from the mouth of the fish just as I was reaching to lip the fish...... Ouch...... One treble stuck in my finger joint just past the barb.... I recalled all those niffty tricks of the trade how to double loop a piece of fishing line on the exposed hook and while pushing down on shank of the hook, just swiftly pull the line and the hook will pop free...... Well the more I thought about it the more wussied out..... Took the treble hook off the spoon the and cruised back to the boat ramp..... Loeaded the boat and went to my doctor's office.... The Doc numbed my finger, and pushed the hook up through the skin on my finger joint and snipped off the barb, pulled the hook out, gave me a Tetnus shot, and sent me on my way..... Took a few pain killers that night and all was well the next day.... I'll never try and get one out myself --- thinking of such gives me the hibbie-jeebies...... tight lines.....

A friend and I had rented one of those row boats at Lake Jericho. He was casting a small spinner, and one of his casts ended up in my shoulder. It went in past the barb, but I guess the hook wasn't all that sharp, because I just couldn't push it all the way through to snip it. This was compounded by the fact that it was in the back of my shoulder, and hard to reach. My buddy was no use; he was afraid to pull or push on it much at all. Finally, I took a pair of pliers, reached around behind my head, grabbed the hook, and pulled it free. It wasn't nearly as bad as it might sound; there aren't all that many nerve endings there, I guess, not like if it's in your finger or hand. So, does that make me a redneck? Seems to me that if you've ever used pliers to remove a fish hook from your flesh, you might be a redneck.

not once but twice! I think that the rattling rouges make the sharpest, strongest hooks in the business. Both ER docs agreed . Both times in the same thumb also.

they can be dangerous....my 6 year old niece was over at the house playing outside with the kids...my boys are dedicated fisherman..but like to get things out and leave them laying around...so my youngest(6) decided to show all the other kids a muskie bait dad had given him...well long story short..he forgot to put it back in his tackle box..left it laying on the ground...she runs by steps on it..sticks it in her shoe..mind you these are huge hooks on a muskie spinner..well she jerked her foot up to try and free herself and buried the second set of trebles in her calf..all the way ..I mean it was flush with her skin..thru her jeans..so after a trip to the ER and 7 stitches she was fine..but my 6 year old cried for 2 days cause he felt responsible

Human skin is remarkably tough. I've buried crankbait hooks in the same thumb to the bone twice. Had brace the end of my thumb under the console and pull mighty hard with pliers to get them out. If you do this, do it immediately while it's still numb from shock. I was slow the first time it happened and it hurt real real bad. The second time I didn't mess around long and it only hurt real bad.

At Lake Fork in Texas I hit a buddy who bent over in the boat down behind me in the chest with a rattletrap and buried not 1 but 2 hooks on each treble in him. I cut the hooks off the bait and used pliers to pop the hooks out. Clamped onto the hooks with all my strength before giving a mighty yank, last thing I (or him) wanted was the pliers slipping loose. He called me some extremely uncomplimentary names.

My son hooked me through the earlobe years ago. Clean thru one side and out the other just like an earring. My other young son offered to operate, but I declined. Luckily the earlobe is not very sensitive...took the hook out looking in the mirror that night after we got home from fishing. Still had a piece of worm on it.

I hooked a fellow poster on this board through the under arm with a 4.0 Gamakatsu hook on a C-rig a couple of years ago. He pushed it through, cut it off, and pulled it back. He never made a sound, just looked at me. We've fished together since, but he stays on the other end of the boat and keeps an eye on me.

Had a Walleye hit a shad rap, got him in the boat as I went to place my hand around his body he jumped. The treble buried deep into my index finger on my left hand. My bro-in-law was able to cut the hook off the crank bait, but was too sissyified to pull the hook out of my finger.... So I tried to do it several times myself, but it seems that when you try to pull something sharp out of ones finger that is hurting ones finger. It is extremely hard to do, because the finger seems to want to go with the pliers pulling out said hook from finger, because it hurts like heck....Anyway I finally figured out that I had to brace my finger down on the floor of the boat, so that my finger couldn't move. That took care of the movement and I pulled the hook out...Put some ointment on the spot and went back to fishing..... Had two other situations occur as well, but they will be told in a later post.......

I hook myself with a pop r a few years ago. It wasn't because of a fish but because I had hung it in a tree got mad yanked real hard and the bait flew
fifty feet across the lake and zeroed in on the calf of my leg. Pushed it thru and cut the barb and that was the only thing I ever managed to catch that night. by the way wasn't it last year on Ultimate Match Fishing that Roland Martin was fishing against paul elias and elias stuck a barb into his finger. I believe roland used some fishing line and pulled some kind of stunt to remove the hook from elias's finger. Anyone remember that incident or exatctly what he done.

My fishing partner and I were fishing Nolin last spring. I was on the front of the boat and he was in the rear, when he got hung up and he came up front to try to get the bait free. I did not see him coming up front and I caught him in the top of the head with a crankbait (he was wearing a visor). I felt real bad and wanted to take him to the ER but he said no way was he leaving the lake.

I tried to get it out with pliers but that did not work. So I told him about a trick I saw on Hank Parker Outdoors with some fishing line. He said to try it. I cut the hook away from the bait and had him hold the eye of the hook down. I doubled the fishing line and told him I would count to 3 and then take it out. Well I only got to 2 and the hook popped right out. We shook hands he grabbed his rod and went back to fishing. It took me 15 minutes to get a rod back into my hands.

As a matter of fact...last weekend on Barkley my partner got me in the temple with a sammy(7' rod and broke the 15lb test),two barbs on the rear went in,one off the front and it straightened one barb out on impact.Had to go to the ER to get them removed it was a little to close to the eye for me to run them thru, pretty scary tho a few more degrees of lookin forward and it would have been my eye.
