White River, Navigation

Does anyone know how far you can go on the White River (in a boat) into downtown from the north or the south? I heard there was a **** somewhere that you cannot get past, is this true? I would like to launch my boat and cruise through the downtown area and I didnt know if you could get further coming in from the north or south. Are there any good places to launch?

If you are talking about the river that runs though Indianapolis then yes there is a low water **** across that river. You won't be able to get pass that ****. Low water damns are very dangerous places to be in a boat. Even big boats can get sucked into the Hydraulics of these type of damns and capsize. I've seen films of two rescue boats getting sucked into the hydraulics and submerged while they were trying to rescue some people who's boat got sucked into the hydraulics immediately below one of these low water type damns. These things are extremely dangerous. Boats that are under power can get pulled right into the face of the downstream side of the **** are are powerless to pull out of the current.

The current immediately downstream from the face of the **** runs UPSTREAM. You have to be several tens of feet aways from the **** to stay out of the hydraulics.

There are plenty of places to launch on the White River if you need any honest help navigating it I recommend Terry McWilliams at www.fishindy.com he can take you out and show you the ropes. He can also put you on some giant smallies!!!! A trip you won't forget I promise....

It was said tounge and cheek dude. I know the river as good as anyone around. I have fished it my entire life and I am 42. The river gets enough traffic without the internet sending folks to it, especially guides. I know Terry, and yes he is a great guy and a **** good fisherman on top of that. I have made no bones about it to him or anyone else. The river doesn't need any guides on it. It is still recovering from the fish kill. I hear people talk all the time about huge smallies they catch from the river. Those people never fished it before the kill and have no idea what a huge smallie looks like. Keeping 3 pound smallies for the wall because they consider it a "Trophy" is only doing further harm to the river.

Besides anything I said above, river fish are retarded. They are always where they are supposed to be and anyone who has any fishing knowledge at all doesn't need a guide.

LOL.....I wish the fish in our big lakes came from the same gene pool. They're are freaking geniuses, I could have swear I saw one last weekend with a cell phone alerting his friends of my presence.

Yep, own a jet and am on the river about 3-5 times a week. Didn't mean any disrespect, but with a screen name like fish4food I ain't in no hurry to help ya out on a body of water I hold near and dear to my heart.

I have seen that river in the high of it's glory and chest deep in cold ass water dipping out dead fish from the kill. I don't remember seeing any guides out there helping haul off the tons of fish that were killed by Guide Corp. Actualy, I don't remember seeing a lot of fishermen period. Most who volunteered lived on the river. Now that the river has been restocked and on it's way back to some resemblance of what it used to be many years ago guides are popping up a dime a dozen to fill their pockets from everyone else's hard work.

They're is a site for Indiana Smallies and a lot of the guys fish nothing but moving water. If you are catch and release you can learn a lot from these guys. An added bonus is, once ya get to know some of them flowing water smallies are your oyster. I have traveled from one end of this state to the other chasing smallies and through the guys I met on the smallie site, I have never paid for a motel, I have rarely not been fed by hospitable host. I have been shown some of the best smallmouth water a man could ever imagine.

Showing respect for your resource will get much farther than jumping on some message board and just asking every fishermen within keyboards reach to tell ya where their honey holes are that they worked years to find.

If your a sincere catch and release fisherman, send me an e-mail and I will point you in the right direction if it is smallies you seek. If your not ethical or C&R, don't bother typing. And to partialy answer your question sorta, yeah I have sunk my boat before. I think they're is more JB Weld than aluminum left on the bottom. You hit enough rocks bad things happen.

Other than the occasional Tuesday nighter @ Geist you couldn't give me 5 new boats to go back fishing the overcrowded lakes in Indiana. Some of the places I go on the river your lucky to see 1 or 2 people and entire weekend. Get near the public access areas and it is loaded with people, mainly Julio and his buddy's with their buckets keeping any and every fish they catch.

well lov2fish I also love the White River. I grew up cruising the gravel pits all along the river and fishing for snapping turtles and catfish. I am a conservationist, I do eat fish and I do so leagally! I purchased my license just as you did! Personnaly I would not eat a fish out of the white river! Id rather eat fish from a sewage pond! I also dont care to eat bass, accept for a few wipers. I know where there are a few ramps to get onto White River. I have never boated on the White before and was interested boating around downtown to get a different view of the city! I heard there was a **** somewhere and I was trying to find out where it was located and the best place to launch to see most of the city. If you would read my original post you would see that I wasnt asking for any fishing advice I was asking for navigation information, so Im not sure where your rant is coming from but you need to take it out on someone else or at least someone elses post!!
