Yes if it is used on public waters

The statute reads: "Every motorboat on the waters of this state shall be numbered and currently registered in accordance with the provisions of this chapter." To me, that means public and private waters. Go to http://fw.ky.gov/Navigation.asp?cid=102 and click on "Boating Regulations" or "Boating Statutes" and you can check out the regs yourself. What I haven't been able to find is a good definition of "motorboat." That may sound silly, but my understanding has always been that those regulations only apply to boats with internal combustion motors. But I can't find any documentation to back that up, so I would call DMV just to be sure. That's where you get the license, so they should know.
I just got a canoe and was given the papers on it - and was told that if I was just going to float it and such it would not have to be registered, but if I wanted to put a trolling motor on it then I had to get it licensed.
If all you have is a trolling motor on the boat you can get a trolling motor liscene. I cant remember the price but it is a couple bucks cheaper than a regular liscene...or at least thats the way it was 5-6 years ago.

I thought that if it didn't have a internal combustion engine propulsion, then you didn't need to license it. The trolling motor licenses is a new one on me. Not saying it isn't real, because our government is always trying to find a way to get more of our money.
Have a friend that has a canoe and he was fine till he put on the trolling motor on it then he got a ticket. They told him if it has a motor of any kind it has to have a licence. This was on Herrington and about 15 years ago.

I always understood that any motor on a boat will require a fee. I would check with the local authorities to be sure.
