    Kentucky River

Fished KY river over the weekend, early morning, between lock 6 and 7. Nailed a couple of good sized smallies on a crankbait near rock bars and creek mouths, a few KY's and largemouth as well. but after the sun came up, it was over. Anyone else fish the river lately? Its a helluva lot closer than some of these lakes and has got plenty of smallmouth. I just dont know how to fish it other than the obvious (rock bars, locks, creeks, etc) places.

Does anyone fish the shallow (muddy side) and do well? I usually fish the channel (rocky) side, but havent graphed much on the bottom around that side.

Any river guys here can offer words of wisdom?

I fish the Dix and KY quite often because my farm is just on top of the palisades near Highbridge. As far as I know, you have picked the best places. You will not graph many fish in the channels unless they are catfish or perch. All my bass come from the rocky banks, creek bars and wood. You are right the early mornings are the best unless you fish the bars and rocks at night. You can boat some nice SM on fullmoon nights on top water and jigs on the rocks and bars. I might add that the river gets really foggy at night so you must be very careful at night. You can really get turned around in heavy fog.

    Bonefish, we need to talk

Yea, I have never thought it was a good idea to nite fish the river, what with all the locks, stumps and rock bars around. But then again, I dont know it that well. That creek mouth below HB is great, the bridge support there and the bank between HB and the mouth of Dix have always been productive for me. Are there many rock bars upstream from HB?

Lastly, you said you catch most on rock banks, do you fish the muddy side at all with all the wood and laydowns? What about the other pools (sulphur well, camp nelson, etc) do you fish?

I only fish the Highbridge pool, and you are right, the bank from the Dix down river under the bridge is a good place. As you go up river toward Camp Nelson, there a number of creek bars and rocky banks up that way. You can catch good bass at times from the drift wood on jigs.

That's the closest body of water for me too - 15 mins to Highbridge or the ramp under 27. I need to learn more about it. I've only been on it once.
