I saw the tail end of a news story about two boats hitting head on on C'land. Anyone else see this?

Days into search, boater still missing



WKYT-TV, Lexington, July 3 07...

Operations to find Mark Sayers entered its third day on Tuesday. People say they can't find his body after a boating accident that also injured several people from Indiana. More than 20 people from numerous counties have joined the search.

“At this time the search operation has turned into a a recovery operation,” says Danny Rogers with the Russell County Search and Rescue Center. But just where the body of Sayers is remains a mystery.

Officials say Sayers was in a brand new boat… by himself…about 10:30 Saturday night when something caused his boat to hit another one head on.

“All of them are volunteers,” says Russell County Emergency Management Director H.M. Bottom. “They're taking time off their jobs. Some their vacation. There's nothing they get except gasoline and food.”

The irony here is that almost exactly two years ago to the day...these same crews looked for another missing man...Barry Flowers...who disappeared in almost the exact same spot as Sayers. Flowers’ body didn't turn up for weeks.

That's the sad part of it all, the family wants his body so they can at least start the healing process and get his funeral arrangements started and over with.

These young kids get out on these Jet Ski's, Wave Runners and Sea-Doo's and think their invincible by doing all these crazy stunts on them..... I believe the people who ride them are worse than the actual pleasure boaters out on the water at times as well....

I don't think the poor guy was one of the jet skiers. I saw the story on the jet skies over here in Western KY, and this particular story says the guy was out in a brand new boat at 10:30 at night. I don't think Jet Skies are allowed out after dark, and if he were on a jet ski, I think it would have been germane to the story, and mentioned.

Just my take on the story, not trying to be offensive or anything.

Must have the story mixed up with another one that was televised on the local news yesterday. They said two jet ski's were jumping waves and hit each other. One person from Ca. and the other from Indiana is all I know...Maybe the news got the wrong info, but that is what I saw and heard.

The first accident happened Saturday night in Wolf creek. Newly purchased go fast with 1 person on board hit fishing boat with 4 people on board. Person on go fast is missing.

Second accident happened Monday afternoon in Greasy creek behind Jamestown Marina. 2 young males on PWCs collided killing one. One reportedly from Indiana the other from Florida.

About the jet ski accident...being that one man is from California, is it possible that the jet ski was a rental? For years and years I've been strictly against jet ski rentals - the short and quick instruction given to the riders, if any at all, is not good enough. I would go as far to say that probably 75% or more of the accidents occuring with jet skis are from inexperienced riders. I've driven jet skis since I was eight years old and have never had a close call, simply because I know the rules of the road and the limitations that go along with a jet powered watercraft. I love jumping waves and probably have jumped high enough to clear small buildings before - it's awesome! However, you have to be careful and aware of your surroundings when jumping waves. Something that happens quite frequently when I'm jumping waves is that some ding dong will start jumping the same ones and not pay any attention to what is going on. The idiot gets so focused on the waves and getting the most air that he forgets that there are other boats on the water. When that happens I usually express my displeasure and move on down the lake.

It's a shame that this accident happened, but it's pretty much the same story that I've heard many times over, and I'm sure it will continue until more restrictions are put on jet skis. I think the operator license for jet skis was a step in the right direction, however it should apply to operators of all ages rather than to just those under the age of 18. If all operators had to have a license, the whole business of jet ski rentals would no longer be a problem and the waters would be much safer.

Rider was from Fl- not CA. He had been thru safety training class as was the lad that hit him. Both experienced jet-skiers.

It's a wonder you don't see more accidents happening on Taylorsville Lake - I was out there on the 4th of July and spent all day dodging tubers and skiers! Seemed like any and all boats out there were dragging someone or something behind it! It was my first time on Taylorsville on a holiday weekend, and it was nothing like anything I've ever experienced! However, the fishing was pretty darn good for Taylorsville, especially after that rain shower passed through at around 6 p.m.

Irregardless of the age and experince level and the water craft for that matter. the simple fact is we have been allowed to police ourselves on the water forever and every year we see bigger faster and more powerful boats and jet skies. 200+ HP fishing boats 40 to 50 foot speed demons with over a thousand horses the operators can not see within 40 feet of his own bow. If we drove our cars like we drive our boats most of us would be in prison so until some one invents a water brake other than one involving the bank or the next smaller water craft we are all responsible for our own safty as well as the ones we share the water with.

With my Sea-Doo I received a White Ignition Key...It's a Training Key....So that the Sea-Doo can't go over 35 MPH...Maybe this type of Key should be required for all Rental Type Jet Ski's... might help save some lives and injuries might be prevented..... Just a thought....

Then after the Rental Shop knows the person renting the Sea-Doo, Jet Ski, Wave Runner or what ever else there might be on the market...They can then issue the yellow ignition key...So the person can go as fast as the vehicle will go...But in my mind why do you have to travel 70mph on a Vehicle of this type anyway when only renting such an item.......

MSG (master SGT by chance just guessing) did not know they had a training key great idea and your right that should be a requirment for a rental. I know while on vaction with the wife and kids & grand kids in Panama City they rented flying boats that did indeed fly, just $175 for thirty minutes of flight time at about 1 to 2 hundred feet above sea level, you could fly solo if you first flew with an instructor for full price for the first half hour, they would then issue you a license to fly the boat after he tested you and passed you. From that point you could rent for up to two years with out being required to retest.
