    Ohio River fishing

    Hey all ,
Thought I would share my fishing trip last week with my father-in-law and my daughter below the John T Meyers dam { Uniontown } . Headed out mid-morning and stopped to talk to some people who had caught some nice crappie and a bonus saugar . Ran up some backwater coves to get some shad with the cast net , not to many but enough to start . Lots of balls of small 1-2" shad , to small to catfish with . Plenty of small stripers , saugar , and some gill also caught in the net . The Ohio is a healthy fishery . Anyway ran to the dam and anchored right on the line in the fast water and cast heavy rigs for big cats with some herring caught by my father-in-law on a doll fly rig { ultra light rod with a 5-6 small flys tied in a row } but just a few small 4-8 pounders caught . I did a lot of casting with a CC spoon for stripers and caught a few 2-3 pounders , 2 drum , 12 strange looking small silver fish my pop called "whiteys" . They look like carp but have teeth and a extra jaw ! Also caught a nice 10lb wiper that my daughter had the chore of reeling in . Lost a lot of sinkers to snags { no suprise there } but fishing a 3-way swivel with lighter test on the sinker allows you to break it off and get your rig back . I ran out of spoons { dang snags ! } so ordered more from BPS yesterday - hope to hit the river below Newburgh for some more rockfish & wipers when they come in . Tight Lines

    Re: Ohio River fishing

That dam fishing sure is fun! I just got into fishing them in June, in three trips I caught a 6lb hybrid and a 15lb striper, a few smaller cats and bait. If you want to catch the perfect bait use a spoon or gay blade and cast right into the current. Youll catch qizzard shad and if your lucky, skipjack. I think the whitefish with teeth as you referred to it as a whitey, is a skippy. Its the greatest catfish bait on the river. If you want to catch big cats, use skips. Congrads on your stripers! Coming into the spring the only thing I fished for on the river where cats, now I strickly fish for stripers. They are a blast. Goodluck to you!
