    C-Rig and Tungston

This spring I start using tungston wts on my C-Rig with glass beads. After catching a couple of small KYs one morning, I noticed the glass bead was broken so I relplaced the bead without a problem for the rest of the day. A week passed before I got to fish again. This time I hung a good fish and lost the fish because my line broke. The break was in the area where the tungston wt and bead made contact which makes me suspecious that tongston wts may crack a glass bead and cut the line. Tungston wts do improve your feel, but I am thinking that plastic beads may be better with tongston. I also feel rubber or plastic pegs may be better than wooden pegs because wood may damage the line. Any thoughts?

I had a problem like that years ago but i found it to be the weight hitting the knott regardless of the sinker type. I started using a red hard plastic piece (can't remember the name off hand...carolina keeper?) that you squeeze to open up the slit so you can run your line through which protects the knott from the sinker slamming onto it... Of course the sinker and bead are above this piece. It helped alot maybe this can help solve your problem?

I'm not sure about the c-rig, I've never had that prob w/tungsten and glass beads. About the wooden peg vs. the plastic........ The plastic peg (which tru tungsten makes) is MUCH better. What happens with the wooden peg is that it pinches your line tightly against the sinker which will rub your line across the rough edge of the sinker causing a weak spot. With the plastic pegs, your line passes through the peg eliminating contact with the sinker itself. Hope that helps. Drew.

I LOVE the tungsten weights. They are smaller, and seem to hang up less. I know what you mean about the broken glass beads, especially when fishing a rocky bottom. However, I consider that a small problem. I use braid... and maybe that could be the difference. About the only time my line really breaks is after the line has been on my reel for over three years, then it breaks almost every time I set the hook... right Grumpy??

As for pegging weights, I have found I prefer to use Florida style weights. They have the cork screw that allows you to screw the weight into the soft plastic, then you have two things going for you, the weight acts the same as being pegged, AND the bait is kept up on the hook. You do go through a few more baits though.

    Good luck....

    Danny,
I was always a Frlorida rig guy myself but had to change up a little when i started using tubes. The tubes i use do not have a solid head so the rubber peg-it worked out great when i want that sinker at the bait at all times.

I read a suggestion the other week where you could soak foam ear plugs with scent and stuff them up in your tubs which will allow them to float higher and even use them as a top-water frog bait.

Alot of fisherman years ago use to do the same thing with a small piece of cotton ball with scent on it stuffed up in the top of a tube bait. Funny though...soak a piece of cotton in water and it doesn't float after it is satturated..but it does hold the scent for a while. Early ways to put scent in a tube...283

I read this and I can remember where to save me to offer the article to everyone to read. Tungsten is much harder than lead so it will break the glass beads from the banging against it. Take a brass bead and put it in between the weight and glass and you won't ever have that problem again, plus you get a lot more noise from the brass beating against the glass than you will from the tungsten beating against it. I tried it and haven't had anymore than normal line wear since. Tungsten is better than than lead by far, smaller size and the hardness of it transmits better feel through the line than lead does. It's about all I use now.
