Spro Frog???

OK guys, I need a little help.

I've not been exposed to fishing grass much until the last year or so when the grass at KY Lake finally has come back.

So I'm thinking that this year as the water falls, we should get some good matted grass to fish. I have some rats and regular frogs, figured those would be great to start with. But I was watching Roland Martin's Infomercial with Dean Rojas showing off the Spro Frog. So I wondered about maybe trying one of those. I found them, priced around $9.

My question then becomes, is the Spro frog really that much better? I decided not to buy them, but I do have a birthday coming up, and I know my wife will get them for me if I say I want them. So guys, gals, are they worth it? Have you used them?

I haven't used them and probably never will, when it comes to fishing matted grass, I use a RAT or a Texas rigged worm, like a senko. I haven't seen any frog that is any better than the rat I use and I am very good at fishing Rats on top of the grass. Only problem here in KY I would have to drive 4 hours to KY Lake to use one or to Patoka in Indiana. This of course is just my honest opinion on the frogs, I like Rats or Senko's for matted grass.

I haven't tried them yet either, but I like to take a Mann's rat and put some pieces of worm in the body to make it more buoyant when fishing it on heavy line and it also provides weight on the hookset.

I like the Manns rat over any frog I've tried seems to bring more strikes but the hook up ratio is really low.

I Have Fished This Way On Guntersville A Few Times, And This Is Fun Fishing, But I Prefer The Soft Plastic "ribbit" Or The Reaction Innovations "swamp Donkey". But The Spro Is A Nice Looking Bait, And My Buddy Uses One Of These, I Dont Think On The Grass Mats It Really Matters, Just As Long As The Fish Can Tell Something Is Going Across The Top, But This Is A Blast, Have Fun And Good Luck...............................

I've only tried a few of these kinds of baits just because there isn't any grass in the lakes that I fish. I rarely make it to the twins. I will tell you this about the SPRO frog, and as usual it's something that I read then tried, if you cut about a 1/2 inch of off one of the legs you make it walk the dog with really gentle twitches. I never caught a fish on a that frog until I did that and I've caught a bunch since then. I tried with some others and it doesn't work anywhere near as well so I'm sticking with the SPRO personally. It's a big fish bait, that much I've seen now.

I have several in different colors and i love them in the sparse grass or duckweed. I love the weight of them and the fact that you can work it fast and it really pops well. My best luck has been around the grass or in between the mats not directly on it. My Zoom Horny Toad seems to do better for me on the thicker stuff.

Thanks everyone. I think the consensus is stay cheap on the matted grass, which I expect to find as the lakes continue to be drawn down. And then consider the more expensive Spro if I am in more open water, but there I"ve been using the Zoom Horny Toad.

Two other baits I like over the grass, one I've actually tried... and that is a chatterbait.. I love this bait, and the other is the swim baits. I have some that look like crappie minnows, and some that look like bluegill minnows. I guess fry is a better description than the word minnow.

I forgot I had the new swim baits with me last time. Call me a ... well something weak, 'cuz I am not going to be out there fishing in this predicted 97 degree heat, then add the humidity. Now if I was down there, where I could drive just about 20 minutes, fish a couple of hours, and then hit the air conditioned recliner...LOL.. I"d be out there right now. But kind of like msgmills said about his 4 hour drive, I have about 2 hours to fenton, or just under that. I don't mind the drive, but I'm not crazy about $$$$ of gas for that round trip and only fish 4 hours...LOL

Thanks again guys. I appreciate all your input. As soon as the heat wave breaks, I'll hopefully let you know if the water is low enough to create the mats yet.

I was down last week end and didn't go south or fish up on flats much (night fishing to boot) but at Fenton there are some impressive matted grass beds already. Any thicker and it will impede boat traffic.

I like the Spro Frog better than the cheap ones. When you cast the el cheapos the hooks sometimes turn and when they land it will get caught in the grass. Also, if you catch a little too much grass when it lands and you give it a jerk the frog is too soft and again, you will get grass or moss. The spro is a little more firm AND it doesn't take on water and sink like the cheap ones after using for a longer period of time. Go with the Spro. You will spend a lot less time checking it after every cast making sure the hooks are set up right and not getting the water out of it.

I agree with Roostertail and would like to add that i had flat out wore my first Spro Frog out with last Spring Spawn and Summers frog bite. This thing is battered and discolored from the scrapes and my own added colors but throws like a champ, hooks fish like crazy and still walks the dog plus pops very good. Hard to beat such a bait.

SPRO all the way! I've had some really great luck in the past with the SPRO bronze eye. I typically use the green/yellow color combo. I used it on the grass matts down around Paris on Ky Lake last fall with great success. Some days the bass would inhale it, and other days they would just smack at it out of sheer anger - on days when they wouldn't take it, I'd revert to crawling a weightless lizard across the matt or slow working a Ribbit, letting it fall into the openings.

I know last year, the grass matts I fished at Paris weren't extremely dense and had lots and lots of openings in the matts, which made "walkin' the frog" very easy and an absolute blast to do. I haven't been down in that area very much this year, but I plan on going down there this weekend! Trust me, I've got several SPRO bronze eyes tied on and I can't wait to whack'em!
