When going from aluminum to stainless steel you need to drop down 1 pitch. An aluminum prop has a lot of flex and when you reve it up under a load the diamiter of the prop will get smaller. Stainless steel will not give and remains the same diamiter. Example if your aluminum prop is 20 pitch you want a 19 pitch stainless.
Same thing for a 3 blade versues 4 blade in stainless props. If you are running a stainless. If running a stainless 24 pitch 3 blade you want a 23 pitch stainless 4 blade.
Not all props are the same. I have seen a 25 pitch Tempest get trashed beyond repair. Bought the same prop and it was 150-200 rpm higher same load same time of year same conditions. Props will vary even if they are the same pitch and same manufacture.
If you can find someone with a used prop that would let you test drive it that would help. If you want some expert advice contact Mark Croften (not for sure about last name) he is the Master Yoda when it comes to getting a prop/boat set up correctly. He can be located at bassboatcentral.com Click on BBC Boards then Prop set up Fourm and post your question. To give you a good answer on set up he will need to know what kind/ size of boat and size hp motor you have. Let him know if you have a water pressuse gauge and how many psi you are running at wide open throttle. Let him know if you have a jackplate or not. If you know your motor height let him know and if you dont know your motor height they have an illistration that shows how to level the boat and motor and measure the height of the propshaft in relation to the pad of the boat.
I know that is alot of information to provide but if you want your rig to preform to the max speed he is the man to talk to.
