I was just in the Backwater Outfitters store in Lexington and noticed they had the new Shimano Core. Very nice looking and feeling reel. I have not had a chance to really look at it yet or cast one yet. Anybody out there got one or used one yet?

I have had the chance to see one and talk with the shimano rep about them. Let me also say that the main complaint i hear about the Chronarch 50mg is that it doens't have a big enough spool. the core 100mg has almost the exact same size spool. on the 50mg it is rated for 105yds of 10lb and the 100mg is 110yd of 10lb. It feels very nice, and looks real sleek, especially on their new ALL black Cumara rods. Although it does have bigger gears in it, and a different frame than the 50mg. Don't get me wrong it has many new exclusive features that make this reel incredible, it is just too bad that they didn't make the spool much bigger.
It is a pretty high dollar reel 349.99- 379.99, EXTREMELY LIGHT- the 6.2:1 reel only weighs 6.1 and the 7.0:1 weighs 6.7
Personally I'm more of a spinning reel fisherman, and the upgraded models of the stradic, sustain, and stella.... WOW! They also came out with a new reel to replace the old stradic called the Saros, and it is supposed to be nicer than the old Stradic.
For those stradic lovers out there, the old white ones are no more. Similar to how they did the Bantam curado last year. Better find em fast.

Just curious why you need more line than that on the spool?I never pull off all the old line when i respool, but i don't catch many that peel the drag either... one reason i would suspect is the smaller spool = less rotational momentum to cause professional overrun?
I try to keep up on most of the written/electronic info available on stuff like this, especially the Shimano's and ABU's. I have been researching this one for a while, along with the new ABU's. I was just wanting to know if anyone had used one yet or better yet taken one apart to see what it is really like on the inside.
As for spinning reels, try the Shimano Twinpower. Thanks.

Rangerman,
I will be getting a couple here real soon. I am needing to sell a couple of the new Curado 100's first. I talked to my Shimano Rep and he said they were so nice he bought 2 for himself. He had offered to let me "field test" one of his, but I told him if he liked them that much, there was no need to "field test" them.
Only the 6.2 to 1 model is out right now, but the 7.0 to 1 will be out in the fall. Probably around October.
He thinks that next year, there will be some other bigger models of the same thing.
Yep, I hear ya. You will have to give us a report when you get a chance to try them out. Also, rumor has it Shimano will be coming out with a new Calais MG.
knowing Shimano the calais MG may cost over 700 bucks..... the pricing of thier reels have put them out of most peoples budgets. They are great reels don't get me wrong but some of the things they do make no sense at all. Jack the price up on one reel (and add bearings) to introduce one (with the same number of bearings as the old) at the same price makes no sense at all. I am not a marketing guru by any means, but I can tell you the revos are killing curados, at least 3-1 in sales.
With that said, the core's do feel quite smooth.
I can't say much about Revo's or any other brand, but Shimano's are made to last a very, very long time. With that in mind, how many other reels do you have to buy to keep replacing them after they break and wear out and how often do you have to replace a Shimano?
I was told that the new bearings in the Core's will still feel like new after 3-5 years of use. How many other reels can say that? I think the price is a bit steep, but if you are pricing quality, performance and longevity----it's not too bad.
BTW---where did you get your data on the Revo selling 3 to 1 and which exact reel were you comparing it too? How many Revo's do you see on E-bay vs. Shimano. Demand is high for old and new Shimano's---period!
100 yards of any lb test is good for me, but if you are using regular diameter line and want to be putting on 12-17lb you will see the amount of line on your spool getting a lot closer to 50 yards and i think that is a little low.
Yea i heard the 3-5 year thing from the rep as well, he also said the same thing about the new spinning reels which excites me. shmiano will always be coming out with the best quality reels and the price will reflect it.
I can't wait to get that new stradic and saros in hand.
I agree i don't see the demand for the Revo's like i do for the Shimano's. JMOI can't say much about Revo's or any other brand, but Shimano's are made to last a very, very long time. A lot of people like the idea of the revo and how it feels, but when it comes to opening up the wallet guys like the Shimano name, because they trust it and know what they are going to get. Abu Garcia round baitcasters are very similar to that same quality, you often find them from the 70's and 80's in near perfect condition, still being used. those are great reels and are made in sweden. A little sticker on the buttom of the revos will tell you where they are made.
With that said, i feel like you have to pay over 200 to get a good quality shimano baitcasting reel. for 150 the revo sx feels incredible and the people that have used it love it (the ones i have talked to). I will never buy a spinning reel other than a shimano, but i am a big fan of the revo and most Abu Garcia baitcasting reels. i guess everyone has their preference.
I did buy a 5:1 Citica last year for cranking at $119 that is awesome. My buddy bought one of the Revos at that time and it's not been as good of a reel as the Shimano he got for his birthday for less money i might add. I agree it's up to the buyer but i'm sold 100% on Shimano. It's great to have the choices....
