I agree i don't see the demand for the Revo's like i do for the Shimano's. JMOI can't say much about Revo's or any other brand, but Shimano's are made to last a very, very long time. With that in mind, how many other reels do you have to buy to keep replacing them after they break and wear out and how often do you have to replace a Shimano?
I was told that the new bearings in the Core's will still feel like new after 3-5 years of use. How many other reels can say that? I think the price is a bit steep, but if you are pricing quality, performance and longevity----it's not too bad.
BTW---where did you get your data on the Revo selling 3 to 1 and which exact reel were you comparing it too? How many Revo's do you see on E-bay vs. Shimano. Demand is high for old and new Shimano's---period!
A lot of people like the idea of the revo and how it feels, but when it comes to opening up the wallet guys like the Shimano name, because they trust it and know what they are going to get. Abu Garcia round baitcasters are very similar to that same quality, you often find them from the 70's and 80's in near perfect condition, still being used. those are great reels and are made in sweden. A little sticker on the buttom of the revos will tell you where they are made.
With that said, i feel like you have to pay over 200 to get a good quality shimano baitcasting reel. for 150 the revo sx feels incredible and the people that have used it love it (the ones i have talked to). I will never buy a spinning reel other than a shimano, but i am a big fan of the revo and most Abu Garcia baitcasting reels. i guess everyone has their preference.
I did buy a 5:1 Citica last year for cranking at $119 that is awesome. My buddy bought one of the Revos at that time and it's not been as good of a reel as the Shimano he got for his birthday for less money i might add. I agree it's up to the buyer but i'm sold 100% on Shimano. It's great to have the choices....
Had a chance to throw a Citica a while back probably my next reel, but there are a couple of Pflugers I like as well.
Stoner
By the way the creek looks like crap.
All-
I have yet to hold the CORE 6.x product but the line capacity thing has my a bit stumped. I've own MG50's and Curado 100D's. Back at the start of Summer, I imported a Metainum MG7 which is the 7:1 Japan version of the CORE with 4 extra bearings in it. The MG7 holds more line then the MG50 or 100D. Spool size is more the size of say my Daiwa Fuego. I have read repeatedly that the CORE is basically the same reel as the Metanium MG but the spools info I'm getting does not seem to confirm that.
The Metanium MG7 has been a blast to fish. Fast line pickup! Much improved drag over the MG50 and smooth. I was thinking about getting a CORE in 6:1 but I'm not sure I want 85yard line capacity. When you make a long cast, you throw out much of your line and as a result the effective spool to pickup line gets smaller. I have found this a problem with both the 100D and MG50 when trying to throw a buzzbait, ratteltrap or burn as spinner.
Go to any bait and tackle shop and you will find out how good the revos are selling. The shimanos are still selling but no where near what they have been selling in the past, and most people are upset with the 80 raise in price..
Supersprint,
I am not trying to argue with you, but SUV's aren't selling as good as they used to either. Does that mean they are not any good anymore? No, but higher price gas has made people need to buy smaller cars. I agree the higher price may have slowed the sale of the new Curado and maybe the Revo is an economical choice. I think you will find the Shimano will last longer and have fewer problems, but I can't really say that either because I have not ever used a Revo. I choose to stick with Shimano regardless---best reel company out there.
Mark, first let me say I have been a die hard shimano man, but danged if they are starting to make me mad, along with a ton of other people. I have seen quite a few of the new curados come back with problems. I sold my new curado because I was disappointed in the performance of it. I had it for less than 6 months and the brakes had already started breaking down.
One of the problems i have with shimano is how good the japan models are. The Metanium and the Core are supposed to be somewhat the same but the Core has fewer bearings and less line on the spool...
